Drop a CR2 RAW file from your Canon EOS 5DS and get the shutter actuation count in seconds — processed entirely in your browser, never uploaded anywhere.
Check Shutter Count →The Canon EOS 5DS (2015) was Canon’s answer to the high-resolution demand from landscape, architectural, and commercial photographers. At 50.6 megapixels, it was the highest-resolution full-frame DSLR available from any manufacturer at its launch. It uses Canon’s EF lens mount, shoots CR2 RAW files, and has a mechanical shutter rated for 150,000 actuations.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Rated Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canon EOS 5DS | 2015 | 50.6 MP full-frame | 150,000 actuations | CR2 |
| Canon EOS 5DS R | 2015 | 50.6 MP full-frame (no OLPF) | 150,000 actuations | CR2 |
| Canon EOS 5D Mark III | 2012 | 22.3 MP full-frame | 150,000 actuations | CR2 |
| Canon EOS 5D Mark IV | 2016 | 30.4 MP full-frame | 150,000 actuations | CR3 |
The Canon 5DS does not display the shutter count in its on-screen menus. The count is written into the MakerNote of every CR2 RAW file.
The 5DS is primarily used by landscape, architectural, and commercial photographers who often take fewer total shots than sports or wildlife photographers. As a result, many used 5DS bodies have surprisingly low counts relative to their age. The rated life is 150,000 actuations.
| Actuation Count | % of Rated Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 15,000 | 0 – 10 % | Very low use — near new |
| 15,000 – 45,000 | 10 – 30 % | Low use — plenty of life remaining |
| 45,000 – 90,000 | 30 – 60 % | Moderate use — typical for a landscape body |
| 90,000 – 135,000 | 60 – 90 % | High use — negotiate price accordingly |
| 135,000 + | 90 %+ | Near or past rated life — budget for shutter replacement |
The Canon 5DS writes images in Canon’s CR2 format — a TIFF-based container with embedded Canon MakerNote metadata. ShutterCount parses the IFD structure to locate the MakerNote block and reads the shutter count tag directly.
All processing happens in your browser — the file never leaves your device.
Canon does not reliably embed the shutter counter in JPEG files. Use a CR2 RAW file for accurate results. If you shoot RAW+JPEG, use the CR2 side of the pair.
Mirror lockup (MLU) fires the shutter in two separate steps: first the mirror flips up, then the shutter fires. This typically registers as a single actuation on the counter. Using MLU is best practice for ultra-high-resolution work on the 5DS and does not inflate the shutter count artificially.
Shoot a CR2 RAW file with your 5DS, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The metadata is read entirely in your browser — no upload needed.
Canon rates the EOS 5DS at 150,000 actuations. This is a median estimate based on Canon’s testing; many shutters last significantly longer.
Both share the same 50.6 MP full-frame sensor and 150,000-actuation shutter rating. The 5DS R has its optical low-pass filter (OLPF) effect cancelled, giving slightly sharper fine detail at the risk of minor moiré on fine repetitive patterns. For most subjects, the difference is negligible in practice.
The EOS R5 (2020) is the spiritual successor: it matches the 5DS in resolution (45 MP), adds in-body stabilisation, 8K video, phase-detection AF with eye tracking, and uses the RF lens mount. The 5DS remains relevant for users with a large EF lens collection or who prefer an optical viewfinder, and used bodies now sell for a fraction of the R5 price.
Only a Canon authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter after a physical shutter replacement. EXIF-editing tools overwrite metadata but cannot alter the in-camera counter. Always verify from an original CR2 RAW file.
