Canon PowerShot G10 Shutter Count:
How to Check & What It Means

Drop a CR2 RAW file from your Canon PowerShot G10 to check the shutter count — processed entirely in your browser, never uploaded anywhere. The G10 is Canon's flagship G-series compact from 2008, featuring a 14.7 MP 1/1.7″ CCD sensor, 5× optical zoom, and full CR2 RAW capability.

Canon PowerShot G10 — Shutter Rating

The Canon PowerShot G10 (2008) was the peak of the first decade of Canon's G-series enthusiast compact line. It features a 14.7 MP 1/1.7″ CCD sensor, DIGIC 4 processor, a 5× optical zoom lens covering 28–140 mm equivalent with f/2.8–4.5 aperture, a built-in optical viewfinder, an ISO dial, and full RAW (CR2) capture. Canon does not publish an official rated shutter life for the G10 — as with all G-series compact cameras, the shutter is designed for enthusiast rather than professional use.

CR2 shutter count support: Canon embeds the shutter count in the MakerNote of CR2 RAW files from its G-series PowerShot cameras. ShutterCount reads this counter from a G10 CR2 file. Drop a G10 CR2 into the tool to verify your actuation count before buying or selling.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Canon PowerShot G10

  1. Set the G10 to shoot RAW: press MENU, go to the first shooting tab, and set Image Quality to RAW or RAW+L.
  2. Take any photo and locate the resulting .CR2 file on your SD card or computer.
  3. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser.
  4. Drag the CR2 file onto the drop zone, or click to browse for the file.
  5. The tool reads the Canon MakerNote ShutterCount field from the CR2 EXIF block and displays your total actuations instantly.
Note: The G10 uses SD/SDHC cards (not CF). Transfer your ORF file to a computer via an SD card reader or USB cable in PC connection mode.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Canon PowerShot G10?

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 5,0000 – 5 %Very low use — near new
5,000 – 25,0005 – 25 %Low to moderate use
25,000 – 60,00025 – 60 %Moderate use — normal for an enthusiast compact
60,000 – 85,00060 – 85 %High use — negotiate price
85,000 +85 %+Near or past estimated life
CCD sensor note: The G10 uses a CCD sensor rather than CMOS. CCD sensors are more sensitive to voltage spikes and can develop a faint horizontal banding artefact over time. Test high-ISO shots for banding on the body before purchasing.

Canon PowerShot G10 — FAQ

Can I read the shutter count from a G10 CR2 file?

Yes. Canon embeds the shutter count in the MakerNote of CR2 files from G-series PowerShot cameras including the G10. Drop a G10 CR2 into shuttercount.app to read the total actuation count. Especially valuable for evaluating these now 15+ year old cameras.

Why did the G11 have fewer megapixels than the G10?

Canon pushed the 1/1.7″ CCD sensor to 14.7 MP on the G10, but the denser pixel pitch produced notably noisier images at ISO 400 and above compared to the 12.1 MP G9. The G11 deliberately stepped back to 10 MP on a new CMOS sensor to improve noise handling — a move widely praised by photographers who valued image quality over resolution bragging rights.

Does the G10 have an articulating LCD?

No. Unlike the G11 and later G-series models, the G10 has a fixed 3.0″ LCD that does not tilt or swivel. The G10 compensates with a built-in optical viewfinder, which many photographers preferred for shooting in bright sunlight.

Is the Canon PowerShot G10 still worth buying?

At current used prices the G10 is very affordable. It offers full manual control, an optical viewfinder, RAW (CR2) capture, and 28–140 mm coverage. The CCD sensor can produce excellent images at base ISO. The main limitation is high-ISO noise compared to modern sensors. Verify the shutter count from a CR2 file before purchasing, and check the front lens element and LCD condition.
