Canon EOS R5 Mark II — Shutter Rating

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II (2024) is Canon's flagship hybrid mirrorless camera, succeeding the hugely popular original R5. It features a new 45 MP partially-stacked CMOS sensor with eye-control AF, improved thermal management for extended video recording, and a mechanical shutter rated at 500,000 actuations — one of the highest ratings in Canon's mirrorless lineup.

ModelReleaseSensorRated Shutter LifeRAW Format
Canon EOS R5 Mark II202445 MP full-frame (partially stacked)500,000CR3
Canon EOS R5202045 MP full-frame300,000CR3
Canon EOS R1202424.2 MP full-frame (stacked)500,000CR3
New offset: The R5 Mark II uses a different CameraInfo block layout than the original R5. The shutter count is stored at byte offset 0x069C (uint32) instead of the R5's 0x0AF1. ShutterCount detects the model automatically and applies the correct offset.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Canon R5 Mark II

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II does not display the shutter count in its menus. The count is written into the MakerNote of every CR3 RAW file at offset 0x069C.

  1. Take any photo with your Canon R5 Mark II and locate the .CR3 file. Do not use in-camera JPEG exports — the counter may not be present in those files.
  2. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
  3. Drag the CR3 file onto the drop zone, or click to open a file picker.
  4. The shutter count and remaining life percentage appear instantly. No upload, no account, no plugins required.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Canon R5 Mark II?

With a rated shutter life of 500,000 actuations, the R5 Mark II has one of the most durable shutters in its class.

Actuation Count% of Rated LifeAssessment
0 – 50,0000 – 10 %Very low use — near new
50,000 – 150,00010 – 30 %Low use — plenty of life remaining
150,000 – 300,00030 – 60 %Moderate use — normal for active shooters
300,000 – 450,00060 – 90 %High use — negotiate price accordingly
450,000 +90 %+Near or past rated life — budget for shutter replacement

How Does ShutterCount Read the R5 Mark II Shutter Count?

The R5 Mark II writes images in Canon's CR3 format — an ISOBMFF container. ShutterCount parses the box hierarchy to locate the embedded EXIF block, then reads the Canon MakerNote.

The shutter counter is stored as a uint32 little-endian value at byte offset 0x069C within the CameraInfo block. This offset was introduced with the R5 Mark II and differs from both the original R5 (0x0AF1) and the newer R1/R6 III generation (0x086D).

100% local: All processing happens in your browser. The CR3 file never leaves your device.

Does the electronic shutter count?

No. The R5 Mark II's electronic shutter uses the partially-stacked sensor's rolling readout without engaging the mechanical curtain. Those frames are not counted. Only mechanical shutter and EFCS exposures increment the counter.

Canon R5 Mark II Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Canon EOS R5 Mark II?

Shoot a CR3 RAW file with your R5 Mark II, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The shutter count is read from offset 0x069C in the file's MakerNote entirely in your browser — no upload needed.

What is the rated shutter life of the Canon EOS R5 Mark II?

Canon rates the R5 Mark II at 500,000 actuations, matching the EOS R1 and significantly exceeding the original R5's 300,000 rating.

Can the shutter count be reset or faked?

Only a Canon authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter after a physical shutter replacement. EXIF-editing tools overwrite metadata but cannot alter the in-camera counter. Always verify from an original CR3 RAW file.

Does the electronic shutter affect the count?

No. The silent electronic shutter bypasses the mechanical curtain entirely and does not increment the count.

What changed from the R5 to the R5 Mark II?

The R5 Mark II features a partially-stacked CMOS sensor (vs conventional BSI on the R5), eye-control AF, improved thermal management, and a higher shutter rating (500k vs 300k). The CR3 shutter count offset changed from 0x0AF1 to 0x069C.
