Canon EOS R5 & R5 Mark II — Shutter Ratings

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's flagship full-frame mirrorless camera, designed for professional photographers and videographers. Its 45 MP sensor and high-speed shooting make it a popular choice for wildlife, sports, and studio work — and also one of the most commonly traded second-hand mirrorless bodies.

Model Release Sensor Rated Shutter Life RAW Format
Canon EOS R5 2020 45 MP full-frame 300,000 CR3
Canon EOS R5 Mark II 2024 45 MP full-frame 500,000 CR3
Note: Canon's ratings are median estimates. Many R5 units exceed 300,000 actuations without shutter failure. However, above the rated threshold the risk of curtain wear increases — factor a potential shutter service (~€150–250) into any second-hand purchase above 250,000 actuations.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Canon R5

The Canon EOS R5 does not show the shutter count in its on-screen menus. The count is written into the MakerNote of every CR3 RAW file. To read it:

  1. Take any photo with your Canon R5 or R5 Mark II and locate the .CR3 file. Do not use in-camera JPEG exports — the counter may not be present in those files.
  2. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
  3. Drag the CR3 file onto the drop zone, or click to open a file picker.
  4. The shutter count and remaining life percentage appear instantly. No upload, no account, no plugins required.

You can drop multiple CR3 files at once to check counts across an entire shooting session or compare two bodies side by side.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Canon R5?

When buying a second-hand Canon R5, the actuation count tells you how much of the rated 300,000-shot shutter life has been consumed.

Actuation Count % of Rated Life (R5) Assessment
0 – 30,000 0 – 10 % Very low use — near new
30,000 – 90,000 10 – 30 % Low use — plenty of life remaining
90,000 – 180,000 30 – 60 % Moderate use — normal for active shooters
180,000 – 270,000 60 – 90 % High use — negotiate price accordingly
270,000 + 90 %+ Near or past rated life — budget for shutter replacement

For the R5 Mark II (rated 500,000), scale proportionally: under 50,000 is very low use; 150,000–300,000 is moderate; above 400,000 is high.

How Does ShutterCount Read the R5 Shutter Count?

Both the R5 and R5 Mark II write images in Canon's CR3 format — an ISOBMFF (ISO Base Media File Format) container. ShutterCount parses the box hierarchy to locate the embedded EXIF block, then reads the Canon MakerNote.

The shutter counter is stored as a uint32 little-endian value at a model-specific byte offset within the MakerNote:

These offsets have been validated against actual R5 and R5 Mark II CR3 files from multiple firmware versions. All processing happens in your browser — the file never leaves your device.

Why can't I use a JPEG from my R5?

Canon does not embed the shutter counter in the MakerNote of JPEG files produced by the R5. Use a CR3 RAW file. If you shoot RAW+JPEG, use the CR3 side of the pair.

Does the electronic shutter count?

No. The R5's electronic shutter uses the sensor's rolling readout without moving the mechanical curtain. Those frames are not counted. Only mechanical shutter and EFCS exposures increment the counter. The R5 Mark II adds a partially-stacked sensor readout; those silent shots are also not counted.

Canon R5 Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Canon EOS R5?

Shoot a CR3 RAW file with your R5, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The shutter count is read from the file's MakerNote entirely in your browser — no upload needed.

What is the rated shutter life of the Canon EOS R5?

Canon rates the EOS R5 at 300,000 actuations and the EOS R5 Mark II at 500,000 actuations. Both are median estimates.

Can the shutter count on a Canon R5 be reset or faked?

Only a Canon authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter, and only after a physical shutter replacement. EXIF-editing tools overwrite metadata but cannot alter the in-camera counter. Always verify from an original CR3 RAW file.

Does the electronic shutter on the Canon R5 affect the count?

No. The silent electronic shutter bypasses the mechanical curtain entirely and does not increment the count. Only mechanical and EFCS exposures are counted.

What is the difference between the R5 and R5 Mark II shutter count offset?

Canon changed the internal CameraInfo block layout between the R5 and R5 Mark II. The original R5 stores the count at offset 0x0AF1, while the Mark II uses 0x069C. ShutterCount automatically detects the model from the CR3 metadata and applies the correct offset.
