ShutterCount reads Canon counters out of the CameraInfo block that CR3 files carry in their CTMD metadata track, and that JPEG and HIF files carry as MakerNote tag 0x0D. There is no universal field: the position of the counter inside that block differs per body, so the parser works from a table of offsets that have each been confirmed against real files from that model.

No R8 Mark II file has been through the validation corpus behind this site, for the ordinary reason that the camera was announced two days before this page was written and does not ship until late October 2026. What happens when you drop one in therefore depends on a detail Canon has not published yet — the exact string the camera writes into the EXIF Model field:

That is unremarkable for a camera in this class: Canon has generally reserved published durability figures for bodies where heavy professional use makes the number a selling point.
The figure you will find quoted elsewhere is roughly 200,000 actuations (est.), carried over from the original EOS R8. It circulates widely on shutter-count and camera-database sites, but it is an estimate for the R8 class rather than a number from Canon's spec sheet for the Mark II, and it is written here as an estimate for exactly that reason. It is deliberately kept out of this page's meta description, because an estimate presented as a specification is the thing that makes these pages untrustworthy.
There is a further reason to hold it loosely here. A durability rating describes a complete two-curtain shutter unit cycling under test. This body's only mechanical part in the light path is a rear curtain, and a figure derived from conventional shutter units does not transfer to it cleanly in either direction. Anyone quoting you an exact rated lifespan for an R8 Mark II is quoting an estimate about a different mechanism.

Depends on your version, and it is worth checking before you trust it. ExifTool maintains its own Canon CameraInfo tables and adds bodies as samples reach its author, so a camera announced in September 2026 may or may not be covered by the build you have installed.
