Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro Shutter Count:
Why the RAF Won't Tell You

Straight answer first: the browser tool on this site cannot give you an actuation total for the Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, and neither can ExifTool. That is not a gap in either parser — the S5 Pro's RAF files contain no lifetime shutter counter to find. Below is why, what the file does carry (including a manufacture date most owners never realise is in there), and what to weigh instead on a Nikon D200-based body that is now approaching twenty years old.

Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro — what it is

Fujifilm announced the FinePix S5 Pro at Photokina in September 2006, with cameras reaching buyers in early 2007. It was the last of Fujifilm's Nikon-bodied professional DSLRs: a Nikon D200 chassis and F mount wrapped around Fujifilm's own Super CCD SR Pro sensor, in which each pixel site pairs a large "S" photodiode with a small "R" photodiode to extend highlight range. It won EISA's European Advanced Camera award for 2007–2008, and the dynamic-range look it produced is why the body still has a following two decades later.

Everything in that table is a published specification except the last two rows, and those two are the reason this page exists.

Why no tool reads an S5 Pro shutter count from the file

Every manufacturer hides the counter somewhere different, and several never wrote one at all. Nikon uses MakerNote tag 0x00A7, Sony an enciphered 0x9050 block, Canon a CameraInfo blob inside the CR3's metadata track. Fujifilm's counter is MakerNote tag 0x1438, ImageCount — and that is exactly where the S5 Pro falls out of the story.

Tag 0x1438 is seven years younger than this camera. It is documented from the X-T1's firmware version 3, released in 2014. The S5 Pro was announced in 2006 and discontinued long before. The tag is not merely missing from one firmware revision of this body — it did not exist as a concept in Fujifilm's MakerNote when the S5 Pro was designed.

So the tool reads the RAF perfectly well and finds nothing to report. A RAF is a Fujifilm container holding a full JPEG with complete EXIF and the Fujifilm MakerNote; this parser locates that block, walks the MakerNote IFD and looks for 0x1438. On an X-T5 the value is there and the count appears. On an S5 Pro the tag is absent, so no number is shown — and no number is invented to fill the space.

ExifTool reaches the same conclusion by an independent route. Its Fujifilm tag table — written and maintained separately from anything here — contains no lifetime actuation counter applicable to this body. The one tag whose name invites confusion is 0x1032 ExposureCount, documented as "number of exposures used for this image": that is the multiple-exposure field for a single frame, and on a normal photograph it is 1. It is not a life total, and anything presenting it as one is misreading it.

The irony is worth stating plainly. The Nikon D200 whose chassis the S5 Pro is built on does report its actuation count, because Nikon writes tag 0x00A7 into every NEF. Put a D200 file and an S5 Pro file side by side in this tool and only one of them answers the question. The shutter mechanism is not what decides this — the firmware writing the metadata is.

The same applies to the FinePix S3 Pro and IS Pro that came before and beside it: same MakerNote generation, same absence of a counter.

What the RAF does tell you — including the manufacture date

An S5 Pro file is not useless for checking a camera; it just answers different questions. Dropping one into shuttercount.app gives you the body identification, the capture date and time, and the exposure data — enough to confirm that a sample really came from the camera being sold, and that it was taken recently rather than dug out of an old folder. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Two caveats specific to a body of this vintage, so you know what a blank field means:

The first line gives you the body, when the frame was taken, and the internal serial with its manufacture date. The second is the honest test of everything on this page: on an S5 Pro file it returns nothing resembling a life total. Run the same command on a modern Fujifilm RAF and ImageCount appears — which is how you can satisfy yourself that the difference is in the camera, not in the command.

If your S5 Pro proves otherwise, we want the file. This conclusion rests on ExifTool's tag tables and on what the parser here finds, not on a bundled S5 Pro sample — no RAF from this body has been through the validation corpus. If a firmware revision of it does write a counter somewhere, that is a support gap worth closing: send a straight-out-of-camera RAF to samples@shuttercount.app and this page gets corrected rather than quietly left wrong.

So where can the number come from?

Not from a photograph, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise by printing a menu path it has not verified.

What can be said honestly is this. Fujifilm's own manual for the S5 Pro documents the set-up menu as MAINTENANCE, TIME and SYSTEM sections, and no actuation-counter entry in it could be confirmed for this page. Used-gear dealers nonetheless list S5 Pro bodies with counts given as "approximately" some round figure, and owners in forum threads quote totals in whole hundreds — which does suggest a counter is readable somewhere by someone, most plausibly through service tooling rather than the ordinary menus. "Suggests" is as far as the evidence goes, and a button sequence published on that basis would be exactly the kind of confident guess this site exists to avoid.

The route with no guesswork in it is a Fujifilm service centre, which can interrogate the body directly. For a camera whose market value is now well below the cost of that visit, the practical answer for most buyers is the one in the next section: judge the camera, not the counter.

What Fujifilm rated the shutter for: nothing published

There is no manufacturer durability figure for the S5 Pro. Fujifilm did not publish one, and the ~100,000 actuations repeated across the internet is not a Fujifilm number at all — it is Nikon's rating for the D200, applied to the S5 Pro on the reasonable but unverified assumption that a shared chassis means a shared shutter life. That is an inference. It may well be right; it is still an estimate, and this page will not dress it up as a specification.

Two things make the estimate a poor deadline in either direction. Owners regularly report S5 Pro bodies working normally well past it — 170,000 actuations with no symptoms, and one widely-cited example sold at 254,000 and still shooting for its new owner. Against that, a mechanism that has spent nearly twenty years in storage can fail well short of any rating for reasons that have nothing to do with use.

Read that table as a rough yardstick against a borrowed figure, and remember that on this particular camera you will usually be applying it to a number the seller cannot actually prove.

Buying a used S5 Pro when the count is unavailable

The absence of a verifiable counter changes what a sensible inspection looks like. These are the checks that carry weight on this body:

  1. Get the manufacture date. Ask for an unedited file and read Fujifilm's InternalSerialNumber with ExifTool. A body built in 2007 and a body built in 2009 are the same model with meaningfully different amounts of shelf life behind them.
  2. Listen through a burst. Fire a run at 3 fps and again at slow speeds. The shutter and mirror should sound identical shot to shot; a stutter, a ringing tail or a change in pitch under continuous fire is worth far more than any counter.
  3. Check every exposure comes out. A tired shutter shows up as uneven exposure across the frame or the occasional black or half-dark image, most visibly at the fastest speeds. Shoot a plain bright surface at 1/8000 s and look at the frames.
  4. Look for sensor dust. This generation has no ultrasonic sensor cleaning. Shoot a blank wall at a small aperture and inspect the file — dust is cleanable, but it tells you how the camera was kept.
  5. Confirm the boring things still work. A battery that holds charge, a CompactFlash card the camera reads, an intact card door and rear screen. On a camera this old these fail more often than shutters do, and some are harder to replace.

None of that requires trusting a seller's number, which on an S5 Pro is the point: the count was never the available evidence here, so the inspection has to be.

Can I get the S5 Pro's count by dropping a file into this site?

No. The tool reads Fujifilm counts from MakerNote tag 0x1438, which is documented only from the X-T1's firmware 3 in 2014. An S5 Pro RAF has no such tag, so the tool identifies the body and reports the EXIF it finds, and the actuation field stays empty. No future parser update can change that on its own — the value is not in the file to be found.

Does ExifTool read it?

Not from the file either. Its Fujifilm tag table documents no lifetime counter for this body. The similarly-named 0x1032 ExposureCount is the number of exposures combined into that single image, not a life total.

The camera is a Nikon D200 inside. Can I use a Nikon tool?

No. Nikon's counter lives in the Nikon MakerNote, and an S5 Pro writes a Fujifilm MakerNote — the shared chassis does not bring the metadata with it. A D200 NEF and an S5 Pro RAF are different files made by different firmware, and only the Nikon one carries tag 0x00A7.

What is the S5 Pro's rated shutter life?

Fujifilm never published one. The ~100,000 figure in circulation is the D200's rating borrowed on the strength of the shared body — an estimate, not a specification, which is why it is written as ~100,000 (est.) here and kept out of this page's search description.

Does formatting the card reset anything relevant?

It resets DCF file numbering, which is the number people most often mistake for a shutter count. Since the S5 Pro records no actuation total in the first place, there is nothing else for a format to affect — and nothing a high file number proves about how much the camera has been used.

Is an S5 Pro still worth buying in 2026?

For the Super CCD SR rendering, which nothing since reproduces exactly, plenty of photographers still think so. Go in knowing that it is a 6 MP-class sensor presented at up to 12 MP, that CompactFlash and the original battery are now the fragile parts of ownership, and that you will be buying without the one reassurance a modern used body gives you — a shutter count you can verify yourself.
