Fujifilm X-A4 — Shutter Rating

The Fujifilm X-A4 (2020) was Fujifilm's compact entry point into the X-mount ecosystem, designed for smartphone photographers transitioning to interchangeable-lens cameras. It features a 24.2 MP APS-C Bayer CMOS sensor, a fully articulating flip-down 3.0-inch touchscreen (180° for self-portraits and vlogging), Bluetooth connectivity for wireless transfer, and Fujifilm's Film Simulation modes including Eterna Cinema. Its compact, lightweight body (336g with kit lens) made it a popular travel and everyday camera.

Fujifilm does not publish an official shutter rating for the X-A4. Based on its entry-level positioning, the estimated lifespan is approximately 100,000–150,000 actuations.

Image counter, not mechanical shutter counter: The value in RAF MakerNote tag 0x1438 is an image counter that resets when the memory card is formatted in-camera. It counts all frames including electronic shutter shots. If the card has been formatted, the displayed count will be lower than the true total mechanical actuations — corroborate with physical wear when evaluating a used X-A4.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Fujifilm X-A4

  1. Take any photo with your X-A4 and locate the .RAF file on your SD card.
  2. Open ShutterCount.app and drag the RAF file into the drop zone. The image count from MakerNote tag 0x1438 (ImageCount) is displayed immediately without any upload.
  3. Alternatively, use ExifTool: exiftool -ImageCount yourfile.RAF to read the count from the command line.
  4. When buying used, ask for a recently shot RAF file. A low count on a 4-year-old body may indicate a recent card format — verify with physical inspection for signs of actual use.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Fujifilm X-A4?

Image Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 5,0000 – 5 %Very low use — near new
5,000 – 30,0005 – 30 %Light use
30,000 – 75,00030 – 75 %Moderate use
75,000 – 100,00075 – 100 %Heavy use — negotiate price
100,000 +100 %+At or past estimated life
Bayer sensor advantage: The X-A4's Bayer sensor produces RAF files compatible with all major RAW processors without the de-mosaicing complexity of X-Trans. Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, and DxO PhotoLab all handle the X-A4's RAW files without the sharpening artefacts that some users report with X-Trans processing.

Fujifilm X-A4 — FAQ

What is the difference between the Fujifilm X-A4 and X-A5?

The X-A4 (2020) is an incremental update to the X-A5 (2018). Key differences: the X-A4 adds a flip-down touchscreen (the X-A5 tilts up, not down), improves the Video mode with Eterna Cinema film simulation, adds USB-C charging, and includes a newer Phase Detection AF implementation. Both use the same 24.2 MP Bayer APS-C sensor, and estimated shutter lifespans are similar.

Does the Fujifilm X-A4 have in-body stabilization?

No. The X-A4 does not have IBIS. Optical image stabilization is available only via OIS-equipped XC and XF lenses. For video handheld shooting, using an OIS lens (such as the XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, which includes OIS) is strongly recommended.

What lenses work on the Fujifilm X-A4?

All Fujifilm X-mount lenses are compatible — XF, XC, and third-party X-mount lenses from Viltrox, Samyang, Sigma, and Tamron all mount and autofocus normally. The X-A4 does not support the GF medium-format mount without an adapter.

Is the Fujifilm X-A4 good for video?

For entry-level video, yes. The X-A4 shoots 4K/30p (with a 1.17× crop), Full HD at up to 120fps for slow motion, and includes F-Log (flat colour profile) for colour grading. The Eterna Cinema film simulation is available for a softer, cinematic look straight out of camera. The lack of IBIS and the 4K crop are the main limitations compared to X-S10 or X-H1.
