Fujifilm X-T4 — Shutter Rating & X-T Series Context

The Fujifilm X-T4 (2020) is the fourth generation of Fujifilm's flagship X-T APS-C mirrorless series. It introduced in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) to the X-T line for the first time, along with a fully articulating rear LCD (replacing the three-axis tilt of the X-T3), dual UHS-II SD card slots, a 26.1 MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, and 4K/60p video. The mechanical shutter is rated at 300,000 actuations — double the X-T3's 150,000.

Card format reset: The shutter count in Fujifilm RAF files (MakerNote tag 0x1438) counts actuations since the last memory card format — not the total lifetime count. If the card has been formatted, the counter resets to zero. Always use a RAF file shot recently with a non-freshly-formatted card for the most useful reading. The hardware mechanical counter (internal to the camera) is unaffected but is only readable by Fujifilm service tools.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Fujifilm X-T4

  1. Take a still photo with your Fujifilm X-T4 using the mechanical shutter on a card that has not been recently formatted. Locate the .RAF file.
  2. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser.
  3. Drag the RAF file onto the drop zone, or click to open a file picker.
  4. The shutter count appears instantly, read from MakerNote tag 0x1438 in your browser.

For a used camera purchase, ask the seller for a RAW file shot after a long period of use without card formatting. A very low count on an older body is suspicious and may indicate a recent card format.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Fujifilm X-T4?

5,000 – 60,0002 – 20 %Moderate use on current card

How Does ShutterCount Read the Fujifilm X-T4 Shutter Count?

Fujifilm RAF files embed the shutter count in MakerNote tag 0x1438. ShutterCount reads this tag directly from the RAF file metadata in your browser. No encryption or decryption is needed (unlike Sony ARW). The value represents actuations since the last card format, not the total lifetime count.

Fujifilm X-T4 Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Fujifilm X-T4?

Shoot a mechanical RAF frame from a non-recently-formatted card and drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is read from MakerNote tag 0x1438 in your browser.

What is the rated shutter life of the Fujifilm X-T4?

Fujifilm rates the X-T4 at 300,000 actuations — double the X-T3 and the same as the X-T5. The flagship X-H2S with its stacked sensor has a higher 500,000-actuation rating.

Does the X-T4's IBIS affect the shutter count?

No. IBIS (in-body image stabilisation) is a sensor movement system and has no relationship to the mechanical shutter count. Enabling or disabling IBIS has no effect on the counter.

Is the Fujifilm X-T4 or X-T5 better to buy used?

For stills photographers, the X-T5's 40.2MP sensor offers a substantial resolution advantage and the newer X-Processor 5 with better subject detection AF. For video shooters, the X-T4's fully articulating LCD and dual card slots make it the stronger choice. Both have 300,000-actuation shutters. Check the card-format counter carefully on either body.

Can the Fujifilm X-T4 shutter count be reset?

The RAF file counter (tag 0x1438) resets to zero every time the memory card is formatted in-camera. The hardware mechanical counter cannot be reset without Fujifilm service tools. This is why a low RAF count does not necessarily mean a low total usage count.
