Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Shutter Count:
How to Check Image Counter

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (2024) shoots in DNG RAW via Pro mode and has no mechanical shutter — the image counter stored in each DNG file records total electronic captures from the rear triple-camera system. Drop a Pro mode DNG file to read it instantly.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold — Foldable Flagship, Triple Rear Camera, Electronic Shutter

The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is powered by the Google Tensor G4 chip and features a 50 MP main camera (f/1.68, 23 mm equiv, PDAF, OIS), a 10.5 MP ultrawide (f/2.2, 121°, fixed focus), and a 10.8 MP 5× periscope telephoto (f/3.1, 113 mm equiv, OIS). The inner display is an 8.0-inch Actua foldable OLED with up to 2,700 nits; the outer cover display is 6.3 inches.

Like all Pixel smartphones, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold uses CMOS electronic readout only. There is no mechanical focal-plane shutter. Every rear-camera capture increments the persistent image counter embedded in Pro mode DNG files.

No mechanical shutter — no shutter wear: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has no focal-plane shutter mechanism. The counter in the Pro mode DNG file reflects total rear-camera electronic captures and has no bearing on hardware wear.

How to Check the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Image Counter

  1. Enable RAW in Pro mode: Open the Camera app, tap More, then select Pro. Tap the RAW icon at the top of the screen to toggle RAW or RAW+JPEG output. RAW capture is available in Pro mode only — not in the default Auto mode.
  2. Take a RAW photo: With RAW enabled in Pro mode, capture any photo. The DNG file is saved alongside the JPEG (if RAW+JPEG is selected) in DCIM/Camera.
  3. Transfer the DNG to a computer: Connect the Pixel 9 Pro Fold via USB-C, select “File transfer (MTP)” mode, and navigate to DCIM/Camera. Copy the .dng file to your computer. Alternatively, use AirDrop via Nearby Share or transfer via Google Drive.
  4. Drop into shuttercount.app: Drag the DNG file onto shuttercount.app. The image counter is read from the DNG metadata and displayed instantly — no upload required.
  5. Alternative — ExifTool: Run exiftool -ImageNumber yourfile.dng to read the counter directly from the file.
Pro mode required for DNG: The Pixel 9 Pro Fold does not output DNG in Auto or other standard modes. RAW output is exclusively available in Pro mode. The DNG files from the rear cameras embed the image counter in the ImageNumber EXIF field.

What to Check When Buying a Used Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Foldable phones have additional wear points compared to conventional smartphones. These are the key factors to evaluate:

What to CheckHow
Inner display creaseInspect at a shallow angle in bright light for delamination or unusual crease widening along the fold line.
Hinge mechanismOpen and close the device repeatedly; it should move smoothly with consistent resistance. Any grinding or catching indicates hinge wear.
Battery healthSettings → Battery. Foldables have smaller individual batteries; check both battery health and cycle count if visible.
Rear camerasTest all three rear cameras (main, ultrawide, 5× telephoto) and the outer cover camera in good lighting; check autofocus on all lenses.
Image counterHigh count (>30,000) indicates intensive use — useful context, not hardware wear.
Hinge durability: Google rates the Pixel 9 Pro Fold hinge for 500,000+ folds. In practice, inspect for smoothness and any play in the hinge when fully open. Small amounts of play are normal; significant wobble is not.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Shutter Count — FAQ

Does the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold have a mechanical shutter?

No. All Pixel 9 models use CMOS electronic readout. There is no focal-plane shutter mechanism and no rated mechanical lifespan. The image counter in Pro mode DNG files tracks total rear-camera electronic captures only.

How do I enable RAW on the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold?

RAW is available in Pro mode only. Open Camera → More → Pro, then tap the RAW icon at the top to enable RAW or RAW+JPEG output. Auto, Night, and other modes do not offer RAW capture.

Does the 8 MP inner selfie camera affect the image counter?

The inner selfie camera (used for video calls when the device is open) does not increment the same counter as the rear cameras. The image counter in rear-camera DNG files counts only rear-camera captures.

How does the Pixel 9 Pro Fold differ from the Pixel 9 Pro for RAW photography?

Both share the same 50 MP f/1.68 main sensor and Tensor G4 chipset. The Pixel 9 Pro has a 48 MP ultrawide with autofocus and a 48 MP 5× periscope telephoto — slightly more capable than the Fold’s 10.5 MP ultrawide and 10.8 MP telephoto, which use smaller sensors to fit within the folding body. RAW output and image counter work identically on both.
