Honor 70 Shutter Count:
How to Check Image Counter

The Honor 70 (2022) shoots native DNG in Pro mode with a 54 MP Sony IMX800 main sensor and has no mechanical shutter — the image counter in each DNG records total electronic captures. Drop a RAW DNG file to read it instantly.

Honor 70 — IMX800 Sensor, Electronic Shutter

The Honor 70 is powered by the Snapdragon 778G Plus and was the first smartphone to feature the Sony IMX800 — a large 1/1.49″ CMOS sensor with 54 MP resolution, delivering improved low-light performance over the more common 1/1.7″ sensors of that generation. Its triple-camera system includes the 54 MP IMX800 (f/1.9, OIS), a 50 MP ultrawide (f/2.2), and a 2 MP depth sensor. Like all smartphones, every camera uses CMOS electronic readout — there is no mechanical focal-plane shutter.

No mechanical shutter — no shutter wear: The Honor 70 has no mechanical focal-plane shutter. The counter in the DNG file reflects total electronic captures. A high image count indicates heavy use but carries no hardware failure risk related to shutter wear.

How to Check the Honor 70 Image Counter

  1. Enable RAW in Pro mode: Open the Camera app and switch to Pro mode. Look for the RAW or DNG toggle in the settings bar and enable it. The Honor 70 saves a DNG alongside each JPEG in Pro mode.
  2. Shoot a test photo: Capture any subject. DNG files are stored in DCIM/Camera on internal storage or SD card.
  3. Transfer the DNG to a computer: Connect via USB in File Transfer mode, or use Honor Share / Bluetooth. Copy the .dng file to your computer.
  4. Drop into shuttercount.app: Drag the DNG file onto shuttercount.app. The tool reads the image counter from the DNG EXIF MakerNote and displays it instantly — no upload required.
  5. Alternative — ExifTool: Run exiftool -ImageNumber yourfile.DNG in a terminal to read the counter directly from the EXIF metadata.
Note: Standard Honor 70 photos (JPEG) do not contain the image counter in a readable form. You must use a DNG RAW file from Pro mode. Photos shared via Honor Share may be re-compressed depending on the receiving app.

What to Check When Buying a Used Honor 70

Because there is no mechanical shutter, the image counter has no direct wear implication. Prioritise these checks when evaluating a used Honor 70:

What to CheckHow
Battery healthSettings → Battery → Battery Information. Honor shows estimated remaining capacity
Display conditionCheck the 6.67″ OLED for burn-in, dead pixels, or cracks — especially at the curved edges
Camera glassInspect all lenses for scratches — the large IMX800 sensor housing is the key lens to check
Body conditionInspect the glass back and plastic-edged frame for cracks or chips around the large circular camera module
Fingerprint sensorVerify the under-display optical fingerprint sensor responds correctly from different finger positions
Image counterHigh count (>30,000) suggests active use — factor into price negotiations

Honor 70 — Sony IMX800 & DNG Technical Notes

The Sony IMX800 is a 1/1.49″ sensor — significantly larger than typical mid-range smartphone sensors — with a 0.8 μm pixel pitch at 54 MP, binning to 4-in-1 for 2.0 μm equivalent pixels in low light. This “large sensor” approach was notable in 2022 and influenced subsequent mid-range sensor designs across the industry.

Image Counter in DNG EXIF

The image counter is stored in the DNG EXIF under the ImageNumber field in Honor’s MakerNote IFD. This counter increments with every capture across all camera modes and cannot be reset by a factory reset or Honor Service Menu.

Honor vs Huawei

Honor was a Huawei sub-brand until 2020, when it was sold and became an independent company. The Honor 70 was the first Honor flagship developed entirely independently of Huawei’s supply chain, using Qualcomm instead of Huawei’s Kirin chips and Google services instead of Huawei Mobile Services. DNG files from the Honor 70 are standard and compatible with all major RAW editors.

Honor 70 Image Counter — FAQ

Does the Honor 70 have a mechanical shutter?

No. All Honor smartphones use CMOS electronic readout — there is no mechanical focal-plane shutter. The capture sound is a synthetic effect. The image counter in the DNG file is a software counter reflecting total electronic captures.

What makes the Sony IMX800 notable?

The IMX800 was the first 1/1.49″ sensor in a mainstream smartphone. The larger sensor area collects more light at equivalent apertures compared to smaller sensors, improving dynamic range and low-light performance. At 54 MP full resolution, individual pixel size is 0.8 μm; in pixel-binned 13.5 MP mode, effective pixel size becomes 1.6 μm.

Is the Honor 70 supported by shuttercount.app?

Yes — drop a DNG RAW file from the Honor 70’s Pro mode into shuttercount.app and the tool will display the image counter.
