Check Shutter Count →The Leica SL2 is Leica's professional full-frame L-mount mirrorless camera, launched in 2019. Its 47.3 MP BSI-CMOS sensor, IP54 weather sealing, and native DNG output make it a camera of choice for studio, landscape, and high-end commercial photographers. The SL2-S (2020) uses a 24.6 MP sensor optimised for low light and video production.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Est. Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leica SL2 | 2019 | 47.3 MP full-frame BSI-CMOS | ~150,000–200,000 | DNG |
| Leica SL2-S | 2020 | 24.6 MP full-frame BSI-CMOS | ~150,000–200,000 | DNG |
The Leica SL2 and SL2-S produce native DNG files containing full EXIF metadata, including the shutter count in MakerNote tags. ShutterCount reads this directly in your browser:

The Leica SL2 is used by professionals and serious enthusiasts. Counts accumulate more quickly in event, wedding, or photojournalism contexts. Studio and landscape use typically results in lower counts.
| Actuation Count | % of Est. Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 15,000 | 0 – 8 % | Very low use — near new |
| 15,000 – 50,000 | 8 – 25 % | Low use — substantial life remaining |
| 50,000 – 100,000 | 25 – 50 % | Moderate use — typical active professional use |
| 100,000 – 150,000 | 50 – 75 % | High use — negotiate; inspect carefully |
| 150,000 + | 75 %+ | Near est. limit — factor Leica service costs (~€400–800+) |
The SL2 (47.3 MP) is primarily a stills camera; the SL2-S (24.6 MP) is used heavily for video. Since video on the SL2-S uses the electronic shutter, a high-video-use SL2-S body will typically have a much lower mechanical shutter count than a comparable SL2 used primarily for stills. This is an advantage when buying: a heavily used SL2-S for video is likely to have a very fresh mechanical shutter.
Both the SL2 and SL2-S use the L-mount, shared with Panasonic (Lumix S1, S5, etc.) and Sigma (fp, fp L). All L-mount cameras from all three brands are fully lens-compatible.

No. Only mechanical shutter exposures are counted. Video recording and electronic shutter shots add zero to the mechanical counter.
Yes. Leica camera service is handled exclusively through authorised Leica service centres, and costs are significantly higher than for Japanese camera brands. Budget €400–800 or more for a shutter replacement, depending on the service centre and model.
