Drop a NEF RAW file from your Nikon 1 J4 and get the exact shutter actuation count in seconds — processed entirely in your browser, never uploaded anywhere.
Check Shutter Count →The Nikon 1 J4 (2014) is a fourth-generation J-series compact mirrorless camera and a significant leap over its predecessor: it introduced an 18.4 MP back-illuminated (BSI) 1-inch CMOS sensor — a jump from the 14.2 MP sensor in the J3 — combined with 20fps continuous shooting with full AF tracking and 4K photo mode via frame extraction. Released in Japan and key Asian markets, it was particularly popular in Japan as a compact high-speed travel camera.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Rated Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nikon 1 J3 | 2013 | 14.2 MP 1-inch CMOS | ~100,000 actuations | NEF |
| Nikon 1 J4 | 2014 | 18.4 MP 1-inch BSI CMOS | ~100,000 actuations | NEF |
| Nikon 1 J5 | 2015 | 20.8 MP 1-inch BSI CMOS | ~100,000 actuations | NEF |
The Nikon 1 J4 does not display the shutter count anywhere in its menu system. The counter is stored in MakerNote tag 0x00A7 of every NEF RAW file — the same tag used across all Nikon 1 cameras.
All parsing runs entirely on your device via JavaScript. Your file never leaves your computer, preserving your privacy even when checking a camera you are considering buying from a seller.
Due to the J4's 20fps burst capability, counts can accumulate faster than on comparable single-shot cameras. Use the table below as a guide when evaluating used units.
| Actuations | Assessment |
|---|---|
| 0 – 5,000 | Barely used — excellent condition for its age |
| 5,000 – 20,000 | Low use — plenty of life remaining |
| 20,000 – 50,000 | Typical use — good value at a fair price |
| 50,000 – 80,000 | Moderate to heavy use — price accordingly |
| 80,000 – 100,000 | Approaching nominal rating — budget for possible shutter service |
| 100,000 + | Beyond expected life — only worth a bargain price |
Keep in mind that a burst of just 5 seconds at 20fps adds 100 shots. Bodies used for sports or wildlife can have higher counts than their age would suggest.
The Nikon 1 J4 writes images in Nikon's NEF format, a TIFF-based RAW container. ShutterCount reads MakerNote tag 0x00A7 to extract the shutter count — the same tag used by the J1, J2, J3, J5, V1, V2, and V3.
All parsing happens in your browser via JavaScript. Your file is never uploaded; everything stays on your device.
The Nikon 1 J4 uses a mechanical shutter. The 20fps burst mode uses the mechanical shutter, incrementing the counter for every frame. Always verify the actuation count, especially on J4 bodies advertised as "used for action photography."
The J5 (2015) succeeded the J4 with an even higher 20.8 MP BSI sensor, a 180°-tilting touchscreen, and improved 4K video at 15fps. Both use MakerNote tag 0x00A7 for the shutter count, readable identically via shuttercount.app.
Shoot a NEF RAW file, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The shutter count is read from MakerNote tag 0x00A7 entirely in your browser — no upload needed.
Nikon did not officially publish a figure for the J4. Based on its compact consumer design and community usage data, ~100,000 actuations is the widely cited estimate. However, burst-mode heavy use may reduce longevity due to the mechanical load of high-speed shooting cycles.
The Nikon 1 (CX) mount was discontinued in 2018. Used lenses are available, but support for new accessories has ended. The FT-1 adapter allows F-mount Nikkor lenses on Nikon 1 bodies, though with crop factor and limited AF compatibility.
Only a Nikon authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter after a physical shutter replacement. EXIF-editing tools can alter metadata but cannot change the in-camera counter. Always verify from an original, untouched NEF RAW file.
ShutterCount supports the entire Nikon 1 lineup. See related guides:
