Check Shutter Count →The Nikon D70 (2004) was one of the most important digital cameras ever made. Priced aggressively against the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, it brought Nikon’s professional-grade features — 7-point AF, 3 fps burst, 6.1 MP CCD sensor, and full Nikon F-mount compatibility — to a mass-market audience. It was the camera that convinced many film shooters to go digital. The D70s (2005) refined the package with a larger LCD and faster USB. The shutter is estimated at around 100,000 actuations.
| Camera | Type | Sensor | Rated Shutter | NEF Tag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nikon D70 | DSLR | 6.1 MP APS-C CCD | ~100,000 | 0x00A7 |
| Nikon D70s (2005 refresh) | DSLR | 6.1 MP APS-C CCD | ~100,000 | 0x00A7 |
| Nikon D80 (successor) | DSLR | 10.2 MP APS-C CCD | 100,000 | 0x00A7 |
| Shutter Count | % of Rated Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 10,000 | < 10 % | Very low use — rare for this age |
| 10,000 – 30,000 | 10 – 30 % | Low use — good condition likely |
| 30,000 – 60,000 | 30 – 60 % | Moderate use — typical for a hobbyist body |
| 60,000 – 90,000 | 60 – 90 % | Heavy use — approaching estimated limit |
| 90,000 + | 90 %+ | Near or past estimated limit |
Given the D70’s age (released 2004), many surviving bodies have been through significant use. At current used prices, the D70 remains an excellent learning camera and a piece of digital photography history.
The Nikon D70 stores the mechanical shutter count in NEF MakerNote EXIF tag 0x00A7 (decimal 167). This is the standard Nikon shutter count field, used identically across all Nikon DSLRs from the D40 to the D6, and all Z-series mirrorless cameras. ShutterCount reads this tag directly in your browser — no encryption or special processing is needed.
Shoot a NEF frame and drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is read from MakerNote tag 0x00A7 in your browser, instantly and privately.
Nikon did not publish an official shutter rating for the D70. Based on the shutter mechanism class, it is generally estimated at around 100,000 actuations. Many bodies have exceeded this significantly.
The D70s (2005) added a larger 2.0″ LCD (vs 1.8″), USB 2.0 (vs 1.1), improved auto white balance, and a wireless remote terminal. The 6.1 MP CCD sensor, AF system, and shutter mechanism are identical.
At today’s prices (often under €50), the D70 is an extraordinary value for learning photography. Its CCD sensor produces a distinctive rendering that many photographers appreciate. The main limitations are the small LCD, slow buffer, and 6.1 MP resolution.
Only Nikon authorised service centres can reset the hardware counter. Always verify from an original NEF file, not a screenshot or JPEG.
