The Nikon D780 stores the mechanical shutter count in NEF MakerNote EXIF tag 0x00A7 (decimal 167). This is the standard Nikon shutter count field, used identically across all Nikon DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless cameras. ShutterCount reads this tag directly in your browser — no encryption or decryption needed.
It depends. In live view, the D780 can use its electronic shutter for silent shooting — those frames do not increment the counter. However, if you use the mechanical shutter in live view (the default), those frames are counted normally.

Nikon rates the D780 at 150,000 actuations. Many units exceed this figure, but the failure risk increases after the rated limit.
Both use the same 24.5 MP BSI sensor. The Z6 offers IBIS, a larger EVF, and native Z-mount lenses. The D780 wins on battery life (2,260 vs 310 CIPA shots), has a true optical viewfinder, and natively supports the entire F-mount lens library. For photographers already invested in F-mount glass, the D780 remains an excellent choice.
