The Nikon Z30 II embeds the mechanical shutter count in MakerNote tag 0x00A7 in every NEF file — the same universal Nikon MakerNote tag used across all Nikon cameras from the D40 through the Z9 II. The counter is a permanent hardware counter that does not reset when the memory card is formatted or when the battery is removed.

Less so than on a traditional stills camera. The Z30 II's primary use case is video, which does not increment the mechanical counter. A body with 50 actuations could have been used daily for months of video shooting. Inspect the LCD hinges, USB-C and HDMI ports, sensor cleanliness, and cosmetic wear alongside the shutter count.
The hardware counter in MakerNote tag 0x00A7 can only be reset by a Nikon authorised service centre after a physical shutter replacement. It does not reset on card format or firmware update. Always verify from an original NEF file, not a screenshot.
The key difference is the electronic viewfinder: the Z50 III has an EVF; the Z30 II does not. If you primarily shoot stills or need a viewfinder for outdoor use, the Z50 III is the better choice. If you create video content for vlogging and live streaming, the Z30 II's no-EVF design saves weight and the articulating screen is optimised for selfie-style framing.
