The Nikon ZR has no mechanical shutter. Every frame it takes, stills and video alike, is exposed off the sensor — so there is no curtain to wear out, no actuation total that means anything, and no rated shutter lifespan from Nikon. This page explains what a ZR file can honestly tell you, and what to check instead.

It is the first camera co-developed with RED Digital Cinema after Nikon's 2024 acquisition, and the first Nikon body to record R3D NE RAW internally. Underneath, it is a close relative of the Z6 III — the same 24.5 MP partially stacked full-frame sensor and EXPEED 7 processor — rebuilt into a boxy, viewfinder-less video body that drops the mechanical shutter entirely.

On a DSLR or a conventional mirrorless body, the shutter count is a wear figure for one specific part: the focal-plane shutter, a spring-loaded pair of curtains that the manufacturer cycle-tests to a rated number, typically into the hundreds of thousands on a full-frame body such as the Z8. The number is useful precisely because it tracks the component most likely to fail first.
The ZR has no such component. Exposure is timed on the sensor, which is why the body reaches 1/16000 s where a curtain tops out at 1/8000 s, why it shoots 20 fps in silence, and why its flash sync falls back to 1/60 s. Counting actuations here would be counting the cycles of a mechanism that was never fitted.
This is a different situation from silent shooting on a body that also has a curtain. On a Zf or a Z8, electronic-shutter frames simply do not add to the mechanical tally — that tally still exists and still means something for the frames taken mechanically. The ZR has no second mode to fall back on, in the same way Nikon’s Z9 has none.
ShutterCount reads Nikon counters from two MakerNote tags, both in plain text inside every NEF: tag 0x00A7 (ShutterCount), which essentially every modern Nikon body writes, and tag 0x0037 (MechanicalShutterCount), which bodies with a curtain use to separate mechanical actuations from the electronic-inclusive total. That universality is why Nikon is the brand this parser reads most reliably — from the D40 era through the Z9.

No ZR file has been through the validation corpus, so this page will not tell you what the tool prints for one. Nikon’s only other shutterless body sets the precedent, and even there the field reports split: some Z9 owners read a running total of shutter releases out of 0x00A7, others read zero. Expect the ZR to behave one of those two ways.
Everything else in the file reads normally: model, firmware version, capture date, ISO, aperture, focal length, and the body and lens serial numbers all come from standard EXIF and are unaffected. Not in the sense that matters. There is no mechanical shutter in this body, so nothing accumulates curtain cycles. A number, if one appears, counts exposures made — it is not a wear figure.
Nikon publishes none, and quoting one would be meaningless: durability ratings describe a mechanical shutter unit under cycle testing, and this camera has no such unit. The parts that age here are the sensor, the card slots, the ports, the monitor hinge and the battery.
You can drop a NEF in, but treat the result as unverified. Tag 0x00A7 is read from every Nikon file, yet no ZR sample has been validated, and the closest precedent — the Z9 — is reported both as writing a release total and as writing zero. The rest of the EXIF reads normally.
Same 24.5 MP partially stacked sensor, same EXPEED 7 processor. The Z6 III keeps the viewfinder and the mechanical shutter, so its count in tag 0x00A7 is a genuine wear proxy against a rated life. The ZR trades both away for internal R3D NE recording, 32-bit float audio, a 4-inch monitor and a fanless cinema body.
Different, not worse. You lose the most convenient wear proxy in photography, but you also lose the part that most often fails and is expensive to replace. The trade-off is that judging the body takes more work: file numbering, dates, recording history and a physical inspection instead of a single number.
There is no mechanical count for it to add to. On bodies that do have a curtain, video is recorded electronically and never increments the mechanical tally — which is why a heavily used video camera can show a deceptively low actuation figure even when it has a shutter.
