OM System OM-1 Mark II — Shutter Rating

The OM System OM-1 Mark II (2024) is the updated flagship of OM System's Micro Four Thirds lineup. It builds on the original OM-1 with substantially improved AI-based subject recognition autofocus, extended burst rates (up to 120 fps with AF/AE tracking), and enhanced video capabilities including 4K/120p. The 20.4 MP stacked BSI CMOS sensor and IP53 weather sealing are carried over from the original. The mechanical shutter retains the 400,000-actuation rating.

In-file shutter count not confirmed: Full-release validation did not find a reliable shutter-count tag in OM System ORF files. The most dependable way to check the OM-1 Mark II shutter count is through the camera's built-in menu (MENU → Wrench → Camera Info → Shutter Count).

How to Check Shutter Count on the OM System OM-1 Mark II

  1. Via camera menu (recommended): Navigate to MENU → Wrench icon → Camera Info. The shutter count is displayed directly on-screen.
  2. Via ORF file (experimental): Take a photo and drop the .ORF file into shuttercount.app. The tool will attempt to extract shutter count from EXIF metadata, but results are not guaranteed for OM System bodies.
  3. When buying used, ask the seller to photograph the camera menu screen showing the shutter count, or to share the value from the Camera Info page.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used OM System OM-1 Mark II?

OM System OM-1 Mark II vs OM-1 — What Changed?

The OM-1 Mark II is an iterative but meaningful upgrade over the original OM-1, primarily aimed at sports and wildlife photographers:

Autofocus: The AI subject recognition system is dramatically expanded. Where the OM-1 recognised birds, cars, and humans, the Mark II adds motorcycles, trains, aeroplanes, insects, and drones. Tracking reliability and speed are also improved.

Burst speed: The maximum electronic shutter burst rate increases to 120 fps with full AF/AE tracking (up from 50 fps on the OM-1).

Video: 4K/120p capture is now supported (up from 4K/60p), and OM-Log recording options are expanded.

Unchanged: The 20.4 MP stacked sensor, 400,000-actuation shutter rating, IP53 weather sealing, and ORF file format are identical to the original OM-1.

OM System OM-1 Mark II — FAQ

What is the rated shutter life of the OM System OM-1 Mark II?

The OM-1 Mark II is rated at 400,000 actuations — identical to the original OM-1 and among the highest in the Micro Four Thirds system.

Does the electronic shutter affect the count?

No. The OM-1 Mark II's electronic shutter mode (up to 120 fps with AF/AE) does not use the mechanical shutter and does not increment the actuation counter. Wildlife and sports photographers who use high-speed burst modes with electronic shutter will accumulate very low mechanical shutter counts.

How do I check the shutter count?

Go to MENU → Wrench icon → Camera Info → Shutter Count. This is the most reliable method, as OM System ORF files do not store a confirmed shutter-count tag in the EXIF metadata.

Is the OM-1 Mark II a good used camera to buy?

Yes, especially for wildlife and sports photography. The 400,000-actuation rating means even a heavily used body has substantial life remaining. The improved AI AF of the Mark II over the original OM-1 makes it particularly attractive for tracking fast-moving subjects at high burst rates.
