Panasonic Lumix G7 Shutter Count:
How to Check & What It Means

Learn about the Panasonic Lumix G7 shutter lifespan, what actuation counts are acceptable for used cameras, and how to verify the count — Panasonic does not embed shutter data in RW2 files, so the camera menu or Lumix Image App is required.

Panasonic Lumix G7 — Shutter Rating

The Panasonic Lumix G7 (2015) was a landmark camera for its price point: it was among the first consumer mirrorless cameras to offer internal 4K/UHD video recording, making it enormously popular with video creators and hybrid shooters. It features a 16 MP Micro Four Thirds Live MOS sensor, 5-axis image stabilisation (in-lens DFD only), and a 2.36M-dot EVF. Its mechanical shutter is rated at 200,000 actuations.

The G7's 4K Photo mode, which captures 8 MP stills extracted from 4K video, uses the electronic shutter exclusively and adds no mechanical wear. Many used G7 bodies therefore show lower-than-expected mechanical counts despite heavy use.

Shutter count not in RW2 files: Panasonic does not embed the shutter count in RW2 RAW files. Dropping a G7 RW2 file into shuttercount.app will return EXIF metadata (model, exposure settings, date) but not the actuation count. Check via the camera menu or Lumix Image App.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Panasonic Lumix G7

  1. Via camera menu: Press MENU → Setup (wrench icon) → Body Battery Info. The shutter actuation count is displayed alongside battery charge cycles.
  2. Via Lumix Image App: Connect the G7 to the Lumix Image App on your smartphone via Wi-Fi. The device information screen shows the total shutter count.
  3. Via ExifTool: Run exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.RW2. Some Panasonic firmware versions embed a shot count in MakerNote tags, though this is not officially documented and not guaranteed across all G7 firmware revisions.
  4. When buying a used G7, request a live demonstration of the camera menu shutter count screen or ask for a screenshot taken in the seller's presence.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Panasonic Lumix G7?

The G7 was released in 2015. Used units may have accumulated significant counts. Consider that many G7 owners used it primarily for video and 4K Photo — meaning mechanical count may be lower than overall camera use would suggest.

Actuation Count% of Rated LifeAssessment
0 – 10,0000 – 5 %Very low use — near new
10,000 – 60,0005 – 30 %Low use
60,000 – 130,00030 – 65 %Moderate use — normal for active shooters
130,000 – 170,00065 – 85 %High use — negotiate price
170,000 +85 %+Near or past rated life
4K Photo mode does not wear the shutter: All 4K Photo captures use the electronic shutter. A G7 with a low mechanical count may have been used intensively for 4K video or 4K Photo — this is completely normal and does not indicate a problem.

Panasonic Lumix G7 — FAQ

What is the rated shutter life of the Panasonic Lumix G7?

The G7 mechanical shutter is rated at 200,000 actuations — the same as the GH5, GH6, G9, and G85.

What makes the G7 different from the G85?

The G85 (G80 outside North America, 2016) added weather sealing, dual image stabilisation (Dual IS 2 combining in-lens OIS and sensor shift), and a slightly improved sensor. The G7 lacks weather sealing but is smaller, lighter, and significantly cheaper on the used market. For studio or indoor use, the G7 remains an excellent choice.

Does the G7 support external microphone input?

Yes. The Panasonic Lumix G7 has a 3.5 mm microphone input jack. It does not have a headphone monitoring output — the G85 and higher bodies add that feature.

What should I check when buying a used G7?

Verify: shutter count via menu, sensor condition (use a solid colour to check for dust or hot pixels), HDMI port integrity (used by videographers for monitoring), articulating screen hinge condition, and battery health (BLG10 or DMW-BLG10E battery is relatively inexpensive to replace).
