Learn about the Panasonic Lumix GH7 shutter lifespan, what actuation counts are acceptable for used cameras, and how to verify the count — Panasonic does not embed shutter data in RW2 files, so the camera menu or Lumix Sync app is required.
Check Shutter Count →The Panasonic Lumix GH7 (2024) is the flagship of the GH series and the most capable Micro Four Thirds video camera at the time of its release. It introduces a new 25.2 MP sensor with a phase-detection AF system — a first for the GH line, which previously relied on Panasonic's DFD contrast-detection system. The GH7 supports internal C4K/60p 10-bit, ProRes recording via CFexpress, and Apple ProRes RAW output over HDMI. Its mechanical shutter is rated at 200,000 actuations.
The camera is aimed primarily at video professionals and serious hybrid shooters. Its mechanical shutter is used mainly for stills; video always uses the electronic rolling shutter readout.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Rated Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic Lumix GH7 | 2024 | 25.2 MP M4/3 | 200,000 | RW2 |
| Panasonic Lumix GH6 (predecessor) | 2022 | 25.2 MP M4/3 | 200,000 | RW2 |
| Panasonic Lumix GH5 (classic) | 2017 | 20.3 MP M4/3 | 200,000 | RW2 |
| Panasonic Lumix S5 II (full-frame equivalent) | 2023 | 24.2 MP FF | 200,000 | RW2 |
exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.RW2. Some Panasonic firmware versions embed a shot count in MakerNote tags, though this is not officially documented and not guaranteed for all GH7 firmware revisions. The GH7 was released in 2024, so most used examples on the secondary market will have low counts. A GH7 used heavily for video may have a very low mechanical shutter count despite significant overall use — this is expected and not a concern.
| Actuation Count | % of Rated Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 10,000 | 0 – 5 % | Very low use — near new |
| 10,000 – 60,000 | 5 – 30 % | Low use |
| 60,000 – 130,000 | 30 – 65 % | Moderate use — normal for active shooters |
| 130,000 – 170,000 | 65 – 85 % | High use — negotiate price |
| 170,000 + | 85 %+ | Near or past rated life |
The GH7 mechanical shutter is rated at 200,000 actuations — the same as the GH5, GH6, and GH5S.
The GH7 adds phase-detection autofocus (the GH6 uses contrast-only DFD AF), internal ProRes recording on CFexpress Type B cards, Apple ProRes RAW HDMI output, a slightly improved processor, and enhanced subject recognition AI. The sensor resolution (25.2 MP) and shutter rating (200,000) are unchanged from the GH6.
The GH7 can record internal ProRes (not RAW) on a CFexpress Type B card. Apple ProRes RAW (actual raw sensor data) requires an external recorder connected via HDMI. Internal recording uses processed video data regardless of the codec.
Verify: shutter count via menu, CFexpress card slot functionality (test with a compatible card), HDMI port integrity (used by many videographers for monitoring or ProRes RAW output), weather sealing condition (check rubber door gaskets), and that the fan ventilation is unobstructed and operating correctly.
