Pentax K-S1 Shutter Count:
How to Check & What It Means

The Pentax K-S1 — the 2014 entry-level APS-C DSLR with 20.1 MP, SR IBIS, and a distinctive illuminated body design — carries an estimated ~100,000-actuation shutter rating. The count can be extracted from PEF RAW files using ExifTool, though PEF is not yet supported in the shuttercount.app browser tool.

Pentax K-S1 — Shutter Rating

The Pentax K-S1 (2014) was notable at launch for its distinctive body design: 8 LED indicators around the lens mount that illuminate to show shooting information, and a choice of colourful body options. Beneath the design choices, it packed a 20.1 MP APS-C sensor (capable of ISO 51,200 in extended mode), SAFOX X phase-detect AF with 11 points, in-body 3-axis Shake Reduction IBIS, built-in Wi-Fi, and K-mount compatibility extending to all K-series lenses including vintage glass.

Pentax does not publish an official shutter rating for the K-S1. Consistent with similar entry-level Pentax K-series bodies, the shutter life is estimated at approximately 100,000 actuations.

PEF not supported in shuttercount.app browser tool: The current version of shuttercount.app does not parse PEF RAW files in the browser. Use ExifTool on a desktop to extract the shutter count from PEF files, or access it directly from the camera menu. DNG output from the K-S1 also embeds the count.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Pentax K-S1

  1. Via ExifTool (PEF files): Run exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.PEF in a terminal. Pentax reliably embeds the shutter count in PEF MakerNote data on all modern K-series bodies including the K-S1.
  2. Via camera menu: Navigate to MENU → Set-up (wrench icon) → scroll to find Shutter Count in the camera information section.
  3. Via Pentax Camera Utility: Connect the K-S1 via USB and open Pentax Camera Utility 5. The camera information panel includes the shutter count.
  4. When buying used, request a live camera-menu display of the shutter count or a PEF file for ExifTool verification.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Pentax K-S1?

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 5,0000 – 5 %Very low use — near new
5,000 – 30,0005 – 30 %Low use
30,000 – 65,00030 – 65 %Moderate to heavy use
65,000 – 85,00065 – 85 %High use — negotiate price
85,000 +85 %+Near or past estimated life
Age-related inspection (2014 model): The K-S1 is now over a decade old. On used examples, check the LCD for brightness uniformity and dead pixels, inspect the rubber grip for hardening or peeling, verify that the LED illumination ring around the lens mount still functions, and test the hot shoe contacts. Also inspect the front mode dial and thumb dial for wear.

Pentax K-S1 — FAQ

What are the LED indicators on the Pentax K-S1?

The K-S1 features 8 LED lights arranged in a ring around the lens mount. These illuminate to indicate shooting information such as remaining buffer capacity, focus confirmation, and drive mode status — a feature unique to the K-S1 within the Pentax lineup. On used examples, verify that the LEDs still function correctly, as individual LED failures are a known cosmetic issue with age.

Is the Pentax K-S1 weather sealed?

The K-S1 has 10 seal points providing basic dust resistance, but it is not fully weather sealed like the K-S2 (102 seals, rated to −10°C). The K-S1 should not be used in heavy rain or dusty environments without protection. This is one of the key improvements Pentax made in the K-S2.

Does the K-S1 support Pixel Shift Resolution?

No. Pixel Shift Resolution was introduced with the K-3 Mark II (2015) and requires a higher-end Pentax body. The K-S1 uses a standard single-exposure sensor-shift IBIS mechanism only.

Is the Pentax K-S1 a good used camera in 2026?

For casual photography and vintage K-mount lens use at a very low price, yes. The 20.1 MP sensor delivers solid image quality, and the IBIS works well with legacy glass. However, the limited weather sealing, older AF system, and 2014-era video capabilities (1080/30p, no mic input) mean it is best suited as a budget entry point into the K-mount ecosystem rather than a primary system camera.
