The Pentax K200D (2008) was the budget companion to the K20D — a 10.2 MP CCD K-mount DSLR with 17 weather seals, AA battery power, and a single SD card slot. Shutter count is readable from PEF via ExifTool, or from DNG files directly in the browser tool.
Check Shutter Count →Released in 2008 alongside the flagship K20D, the Pentax K200D occupied the entry-to-mid segment of the K-mount lineup. Unlike the K20D’s 14.6 MP Samsung CMOS sensor, the K200D uses the same 10.2 MP CCD as the K10D, delivering excellent colour fidelity at base ISO. The camera introduced 17 weather-resistant seals (basic splash protection) — an upgrade over the completely unsealed K100D.
Pentax does not publish an official shutter rating for the K200D. Based on the shared CCD-era entry-level mechanism, the estimated lifespan is approximately ~100,000 actuations.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pentax K200D | 2008 | 10.2 MP APS-C CCD | ~100,000 (est.) | PEF / DNG |
| Pentax K20D (sibling) | 2008 | 14.6 MP APS-C CMOS | 100,000 | PEF / DNG |
| Pentax K100D (predecessor) | 2006 | 6.1 MP APS-C CCD | ~100,000 (est.) | PEF / DNG |
| Pentax K-r (successor) | 2010 | 12.4 MP APS-C CMOS | ~100,000 (est.) | PEF / DNG |
exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.PEF. If your K200D outputs DNG, those files are fully supported in-browser.
exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.PEF. Pentax reliably embeds the shutter count in PEF MakerNote data on the K200D.The K200D is 16+ years old. In addition to shutter count, carefully inspect the AA battery compartment for corrosion, the 17 weather seals for condition, and the rubber grip for delamination.
| Actuation Count | % of Est. Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 5,000 | 0 – 5 % | Very low use — near new |
| 5,000 – 30,000 | 5 – 30 % | Low use — good condition |
| 30,000 – 65,000 | 30 – 65 % | Moderate to heavy use |
| 65,000 – 85,000 | 65 – 85 % | High use — negotiate price |
| 85,000 + | 85 %+ | Near or past est. life — budget for shutter service |
The K200D and K20D launched simultaneously in 2008. Key differences:
For most uses, the K20D is the better choice. The K200D’s advantage is AA battery compatibility for travel and its CCD colour character at base ISO.
Use ExifTool: exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.PEF. Or enable DNG output and drop the file into shuttercount.app. You can also read the count directly from the camera menu: MENU → Set-up → Camera Information.
The K200D uses 4 × AA batteries (alkaline or NiMH rechargeable). This is convenient for travel since AA cells are available worldwide, but it creates a corrosion risk on older bodies. Inspect the battery compartment contacts carefully when buying used.
Partially — the K200D has 17 splash-resistant seals, providing basic protection against light moisture. This is significantly less protection than the 77-point sealing on the K10D or K20D. Do not rely on it for heavy rain exposure.
As an extremely low-cost entry into K-mount photography, the K200D still functions. Its CCD sensor produces smooth, pleasant results at base ISO. High-ISO performance beyond ISO 400 is limiting. For general use, a Pentax K-r or K-x provides a CMOS sensor, IBIS, and HD video at comparable used-market prices.
