Drop a DNG from your Pentax Q-S1 into the tool and the release count is read from the Pentax MakerNote in your browser. One thing to know before you read the number: the Q-S1 body has no mechanical shutter at all — the leaf shutter lives inside the lens.
Check Shutter Count →Ricoh announced the Pentax Q-S1 on 4 August 2014 and put it on sale that September at $499.95 / £379.99 with the kit zoom, in 40 different colour combinations. It is the fourth and last body of the Q system, and imaging-wise it is a Q7: the same 12.4 MP 1/1.7-inch back-illuminated CMOS sensor, the same Q Engine processor, the same Q mount. What changed is the body around them — a Quick Dial and grip machined from aluminium with a synthetic-leather front, in place of the Q7 and Q10’s plastic — plus continuous autofocus in video.

On every DSLR and most mirrorless bodies on this site, “shutter count” and “actuations of the mechanical shutter” are the same number, because the shutter is a focal-plane curtain assembly bolted in front of the sensor. The Q system is built the other way round. There is no mechanical shutter in a Q-mount body. The mechanical shutter is a leaf shutter built into certain lenses, and when the mounted lens has none, the camera falls back on its electronic shutter.

So the number the camera writes into every file is best read as a release counter — how many frames this body has taken — and not as a wear figure for a part inside it. A Q-S1 showing 40,000 releases might have spent all of them on the 01 prime, in which case the wear is in a lens the seller may not even be including; or on the 04 toy lens, in which case nothing mechanical actuated at all. That makes the count still worth reading, just for a different reason: it is the honest measure of how much the camera has been used, and it is the cross-check against a seller’s “barely touched”.
Pentax bodies have stored the counter in MakerNote tag 0x005D since roughly the K10D era — four bytes, always big-endian, XOR-obfuscated against the Date (0x0006) and Time (0x0007) tags, per the algorithm documented in ExifTool’s Pentax.pm (CryptShutterCount) and in exiv2. The Q-S1 writes DNG rather than PEF, and in a native Pentax DNG that MakerNote is not in the usual EXIF tag 0x927C: it is carried in IFD0 tag 0xC634 (DNGPrivateData) behind a PENTAX \0 header, which is where this site’s parser goes looking.
That path is selected on the Make field, not on the model name, so a Q-S1 file is decoded by exactly the same code as a Q7, a K-3 III or a Ricoh GR IV DNG. The support matrix on the home page lists the Q series under the supported Pentax bodies for this reason.
On the desktop the same value comes out of ExifTool: exiftool -ShutterCount file.DNG. The Q-S1 does not display the figure anywhere in its own menus, so a file is the only way to get at it without sending the body to service.
Pentax has never published a shutter durability rating for the Q-S1, or for any other Q-series body. The ~100,000 (est.) figure attached to the Q pages across this site is a community estimate, not a manufacturer specification — and here it is softer still, because there is no mechanical shutter in the body for such a figure to describe. Use the table as a way to place a number in context, not as a countdown.

Two further things the number will not tell you. Frames taken with a toy lens on the electronic shutter cost no mechanical wear at all, so a high count does not automatically imply a tired camera. And the counter can be reset by a Pentax/Ricoh service centre after a repair, which is why capture dates from a handful of original files are worth reading alongside it — a 2015 body with recent dates and a four-figure count deserves a question.
