Check Shutter Count →The Ricoh GR IV (2025) is the fourth generation of Ricoh's acclaimed APS-C fixed-lens compact, continuing the GR series tradition of combining a large sensor with a pocketable body for street and documentary photography. It shares the same 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS sensor and 18.3mm f/2.8 GR LENS (28mm full-frame equivalent) as the GR III, adding improved subject detection AF, enhanced 4-axis IBIS, wireless flash control, and refined noise reduction. Like all GR cameras since 2013, it shoots natively in DNG RAW with shutter count stored in EXIF metadata.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Est. Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ricoh GR IV | 2025 | 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS (28mm equiv.) | ~200,000 | DNG |
| Ricoh GR IIIx | 2021 | 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS (40mm equiv.) | ~200,000 | DNG |
| Ricoh GR III | 2019 | 24.2 MP APS-C CMOS (28mm equiv.) | ~200,000 | DNG |
The Ricoh GR IV shoots RAW files in Adobe DNG format with Ricoh MakerNote EXIF metadata containing the shutter count. ShutterCount reads this directly in your browser:

| Actuation Count | % of Est. Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 10,000 | 0 – 5 % | Very low use — near new condition |
| 10,000 – 50,000 | 5 – 25 % | Low use — substantial life remaining |
| 50,000 – 100,000 | 25 – 50 % | Moderate use — typical for active street shooters |
| 100,000 – 160,000 | 50 – 80 % | High use — inspect lens and sensor carefully |
| 160,000 + | 80 %+ | Near est. limit — factor in potential shutter service ($150–300) |
The GR IV adds subject detection AF for people and animals, a significant upgrade over the contrast-detect CDAF of the GR III. Phase-detect pixels are also improved for faster, more reliable focus acquisition in challenging light — the primary weakness of earlier GR bodies.
IBIS is refined for improved real-world performance in the GR IV, making it more suitable for low-light handheld shooting. The fundamental 4-axis shake reduction mechanism is evolved from the GR III's system.
The GR IV supports wireless flash control via Bluetooth, allowing it to trigger compatible Ricoh flashes remotely — useful for environmental portraits and architectural work where the compact GR form factor is an advantage.
The mechanical shutter mechanism and DNG RAW format are unchanged from the GR III. Shutter count checking works identically across all three generations (GR, GR III, GR IIIx, GR IV).
The GR IV keeps the same 24.2 MP APS-C sensor and 28mm f/2.8 lens but adds subject detection AF, improved IBIS, wireless flash control, and better noise reduction. The DNG format and shutter count storage are unchanged.
Ricoh does not publish an official rating. The estimated lifespan is approximately 200,000 actuations, consistent with the GR III and GR IIIx.
The GR IV supports an electronic shutter mode. Electronic shutter exposures do not actuate the mechanical curtain and generally do not increment the mechanical shutter count.
