Samsung Galaxy S24 — Electronic Shutter, Galaxy AI

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is the base model of Samsung’s 2024 flagship lineup, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy (Exynos 2400 in some regions). Its triple-camera system consists of a 50 MP ISOCELL GNK main sensor (f/1.8, OIS), a 12 MP ultrawide (f/2.2, 120°), and a 10 MP 3× telephoto (f/2.4). The 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display supports up to 120 Hz adaptive refresh.

Unlike the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the base S24 does not include an S Pen and uses a more compact Armor Aluminum frame. RAW DNG capture is available through Samsung’s Expert RAW app (Galaxy Store) or through the native Camera app’s Pro mode. There is no mechanical focal-plane shutter — all capture is electronic.

Expert RAW required: The most reliable method for DNG capture on the Galaxy S24 is Samsung’s Expert RAW app (free, available on the Galaxy Store). The native Camera Pro mode may also produce DNG files on some firmware versions, but Expert RAW provides consistent multi-frame RAW output with the ImageNumber counter reliably embedded.

How to Check the Samsung Galaxy S24 Image Counter

  1. Install Expert RAW: Open the Galaxy Store on your S24 and search for Expert RAW. Install and open it. On first launch, grant camera and storage permissions.
  2. Enable RAW output: In Expert RAW, tap the settings icon and ensure RAW or RAW + JPEG output is enabled. RAW files are saved as DNG to DCIM/ExpertRAW.
  3. Take a test shot: Capture any photo in Expert RAW. DNG files are created in DCIM/ExpertRAW.
  4. Transfer to a computer: Connect the Galaxy S24 via USB-C (choose “File transfer” mode) and copy the .DNG file from DCIM/ExpertRAW. Alternatively, use Samsung Cloud or Google Photos to download the original.
  5. Drop into shuttercount.app: Drag the DNG file onto shuttercount.app. The ImageNumber counter is read and displayed instantly — no upload.
Expert RAW vs Pro mode: Expert RAW is the preferred method — it consistently embeds the ImageNumber counter in all DNG output. The native Pro mode may or may not include the counter depending on the One UI firmware version installed on your device.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Shutter Count — FAQ

Does the Samsung Galaxy S24 have a mechanical shutter?

No. All Galaxy S smartphones use CMOS electronic readout. There is no focal-plane shutter and no rated mechanical lifespan. The image counter in Expert RAW DNG files reflects total electronic captures.

Why does the Galaxy S24 use Snapdragon in the US but Exynos in Europe?

Samsung uses different chipsets by region for strategic and manufacturing reasons. The US, Canada, China, and select markets use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy; other markets including Europe and South Korea use the Exynos 2400. Camera hardware, RAW output, and image counter behaviour are identical on both variants.

Can the image counter on a Galaxy S24 be reset?

No. The image counter is stored in persistent hardware memory and cannot be cleared by a factory reset, firmware flash, or any user action.

Is the S24 or S24 Ultra better for RAW photography?

The S24 Ultra’s 200 MP main sensor produces significantly more detail when shooting at full resolution, and its dual telephoto system (3× + 5× periscope) provides more versatility. For a more compact and affordable RAW-capable Galaxy phone, the S24 delivers good results from its 50 MP main sensor with Expert RAW.
