Understanding the Rated Shutter Life

Camera manufacturers publish a rated shutter life (also called MTTF — Mean Time To Failure) for each body. This number is derived from accelerated lab testing and represents the median actuation count at which 50% of tested shutters are expected to have failed.

Important: The rated count is a statistical median, not a guarantee or a hard limit. Half of all cameras fail before reaching it; the other half exceed it — sometimes by a large margin. Treat it as a risk indicator, not a countdown timer.

When the mechanical shutter curtains wear out, symptoms include image banding, partial exposure, or complete shutter failure. A replacement shutter typically costs €100–300 in parts and labour at an authorised service centre.

How Shutter Count Affects Used Camera Value

As a rough rule of thumb, most buyers and sellers use these bands relative to the manufacturer's rated life:

% of Rated Life ConsumedLabelTypical Price Impact
0 – 10 %Very low useNear-new price justified
10 – 30 %Low useSlight discount vs. new
30 – 60 %Moderate useNormal used market pricing
60 – 90 %High useNegotiate; factor service risk
90 %+Near or past rated lifeBudget €100–300 for shutter replacement

These are guidelines, not rules. A 60%-count camera in pristine condition with all accessories may be worth more than a 20%-count camera with cosmetic damage.
