Straight answer first: your DSLR-A330 does write its shutter count into every ARW file, but the browser tool on this site cannot read it for this body. The value sits inside a 19,154-byte MakerNote block that the parser does not unpack, not in the encrypted block Sony adopted a year later. Drop an A330 file in and you get model, exposure data and capture dates; you do not get an actuation total. The A330 was the middle of that trio: it kept the A230's 10.2 MP CCD sensor but added the two things the cheapest body did without — Quick AF Live View and a vertically tilting screen — at $649 with the 18–55 mm kit lens, between the A230's $549 and the 14.2 MP A380's $849. It is the direct successor to the A300 and inherits that camera's live-view architecture: rather than reading the main sensor, a secondary mirror diverts light to a dedicated phase-detect AF sensor, which is why live view on these bodies focuses at normal DSLR speed.
Like every A-mount body, it carries Super SteadyShot INSIDE sensor-shift stabilisation, so stabilisation works with any A-mount lens including Minolta AF glass from 1985 onward. Sony has moved the hiding place several times across the A-mount and E-mount generations, and the A330 sits in the oldest of the three schemes below.
Every A330 ARW carries a Sony MakerNote tag 0x0020 that is 19,154 bytes long on the A200, A230, A290, A300, A330, A350, A380 and A390 (and 19,148 bytes on the A700, A850 and A900). ExifTool names that block FocusInfo, and inside it, at offset 0x0846, sits a 32-bit little-endian value it reports as ShutterCount. Only the low 24 bits are the counter — ExifTool masks the value with 0x00FFFFFF — so a tool that reads all four bytes as one number can print something absurd. ExifTool marks the field valid for the DSLR-A230, A290, A330, A380, A390, A850 and A900.
The block is not encrypted. It is simply not a plain MakerNote entry either: the counter is a byte offset inside a large binary blob, which has to be located and indexed rather than looked up by tag number.
0x9050 block — the one Sony adopted with the SLT and NEX generations that followed, and still uses today — and looks for the counter as a plain MakerNote entry. An A330 file has neither: it predates 0x9050 entirely, and its counter lives inside the 0x0020 blob that the parser does not unpack. So the file opens, the model and EXIF read normally, and no actuation total comes back. That is a gap in this tool, not in your camera. ExifTool is the free, open-source metadata reader that knows the 0x0846 offset. It runs locally, reads the file and changes nothing.

If nothing comes back, add -a -G1 to see every group ExifTool found — on an A330 file the MakerNotes:FocusInfo group should be present. An empty result almost always means the file has been through an editor, or is a JPEG that was re-compressed. An untouched out-of-camera JPEG usually carries the same MakerNote block, but the ARW is the reliable choice.
Sony published no shutter durability figure for the A330, and none for the A230, A290, A380 or A390 either. The ~100,000 number attached to these bodies across the web — including in some pages on this site — is an estimate based on what entry-level DSLRs of that period were generally understood to manage, not a specification you can hold Sony to. Read the table below as a rough yardstick against an estimate, not as a countdown against a warranty.

On a camera this old the count is rarely the deciding factor. An A330 is now seventeen years old, most examples were bought as first DSLRs and shot a few thousand frames a year, and the parts that actually fail tend not to be the shutter: the rubber grip coating goes sticky, the tilting screen hinge loosens, dust settles on the CCD, and NP-FH50 batteries of this vintage hold very little charge — while the sensor itself was never strong above ISO 800 and has not improved with age. A high count on a cheap body is worth less concern than a sticky mirror or a hinge with play in it.
One genuinely useful check: because the A330 has no video and no electronic shutter, its counter is close to the true actuation figure. That makes it a better proxy for wear than the same number on a modern mirrorless body, where most frames may never have touched the blades.

No. Sony added a Shutter Count entry to the setup menu on the later SLT bodies; the 2009 A-mount DSLRs have no owner-facing readout. The metadata in the file is the accessible source. An authorised service centre can read the body's internal counter directly, where you can still find one that services cameras this old.
No. The counter comes from the camera body, not from the card, so formatting cannot touch it. What formatting and the File Number setting can restart is the DCF file numbering — worth knowing, because file numbers are often mistaken for actuation counts. A body writing DSC00042.ARW may have fired many thousands of frames.
Nothing published. Sony did not quote a shutter durability figure for its entry-level A-mount DSLRs, so the ~100,000 number in circulation is an estimate drawn from the class norm of the period rather than a Sony specification. Any page giving you an exact rated figure for an A330 is quoting an estimate as though it were a fact.
No. Quick AF Live View diverts light with a secondary mirror to a separate AF sensor rather than lifting the main mirror and opening the shutter, so running live view does not cycle the blades. Only recorded exposures do.
Usually something else. At this age the failure points that turn up are sticky grip rubber, a loose tilt-screen hinge, dust on the CCD, an aged NP-FH50 battery and the occasional sticky mirror. A count in the tens of thousands on a body of this class is unremarkable; a mirror that hesitates is not.
