Check Shutter Count →The Sony Alpha SLT-A58 (2013) is a mid-range APS-C SLT (Single Lens Translucent) camera and the direct successor to the SLT-A57. It features a 20.1 MP APS-C Exmor HD CMOS sensor, an upgraded BIONZ processor, 8 fps continuous shooting with continuous phase-detect AF, 1080/60i video recording, and ARW RAW output. The mechanical shutter is estimated at approximately 100,000 actuations (Sony does not publish an official rating for this model).

exiftool -ImageCount yourfile.ARW.The A58 is an entry-to-mid-range consumer SLT. Most used bodies reflect casual to moderate use, though its 8 fps burst mode was popular for sports and action shooters who may have accumulated higher counts.
| Actuation Count | % of Rated Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 10,000 | 0 – 10 % | Very low use — near new |
| 10,000 – 30,000 | 10 – 30 % | Light use — plenty of life remaining |
| 30,000 – 60,000 | 30 – 60 % | Moderate use — normal for active shooters |
| 60,000 – 85,000 | 60 – 85 % | High use — negotiate price accordingly |
| 85,000 + | 85 %+ | Near or past rated life — budget for shutter replacement |
Unlike a conventional DSLR, the A58 has a fixed semi-transparent mirror that cannot be flipped up for cleaning. Dust on this mirror affects phase-detect AF accuracy without appearing in the final image. Inspect the mirror under a torch at an angle — it should be evenly translucent with no dust clumps, smears, or delamination spots.
The A58 can shoot at 8 fps continuously in High Speed mode. Bodies used heavily for sports or wildlife photography may have significantly higher shutter counts than the asking price suggests. Always verify the count from an ARW file before buying.
The A58 uses the NP-FM500H battery, shared with many Sony Alpha SLT and DSLR bodies including the A57, A65, A77, and A99. Check battery health and confirm the original battery charger (BC-VM10A) is included.
The SLT-A68 (2016) is a newer camera with 24.2 MP, 4D Focus (79-point phase-detect covering ~92% of the frame), and a more modern AF system. If A-mount shooting remains your goal, the A68 is generally worth the price difference. The A58 remains a solid budget option for those with existing A-mount glass.

No. The translucent mirror is fixed and does not move during shooting. The shutter count reflects only mechanical shutter actuations, not mirror cycles. However, dust or delamination on the fixed mirror can affect AF accuracy without affecting the count.
Sony has not published an official rating. Community experience estimates it at approximately 100,000 actuations, consistent with other entry-level SLT cameras of this generation.
Only a Sony authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter after a physical shutter replacement. EXIF-editing tools cannot alter the in-camera counter. Always verify from an original ARW file, not a screenshot or shared image.
