The A580 remains a capable 16 MP Exmor body with full A-mount compatibility and in-body IBIS. On the used market it offers excellent value for A-mount lens owners. Always check shutter count — 7 fps burst users may have accumulated high counts quickly.
The Alpha 580 uses unencrypted Sony MakerNote tag 0x014a for the shutter count — the same tag used across the A100–A580 DSLR series. ShutterCount parses the ARW TIFF structure, locates this tag, and reads the counter directly. The A580 is one of the last Sony A-mount cameras to use this straightforward unencrypted approach; the SLT cameras that launched alongside it (A55, A33) switched to the encrypted 0x9050 tag.
Both cameras share the same 16.2 MP Exmor sensor and BIONZ processor. The key difference is the viewfinder: the A580 uses a conventional optical viewfinder with a flip mirror, while the A55 uses Sony's SLT (Single Lens Translucent) technology with a fixed translucent mirror and electronic viewfinder. The A55 offers 10 fps burst vs 7 fps on the A580, but the A580 provides a traditional optical shooting experience. Their shutter counts are stored differently: A580 uses unencrypted tag 0x014a; A55 uses encrypted tag 0x9050.
The A580 records 1080i video using a continuous readout without operating the mechanical shutter. Only still photo exposures increment the shutter counter. Video recording has no impact on the shutter count.
