Sony A6700 — Shutter Rating

The Sony A6700 is Sony's 2023 APS-C flagship mirrorless camera, featuring a 26 MP stacked BSI CMOS sensor with AI-powered subject recognition, 11 fps mechanical burst, and 4K/120p video. It sits at the top of Sony's APS-C lineup and is rated at 200,000 actuations — double the entry-level models and appropriate for its enthusiast-to-semi-pro positioning.

ModelReleaseSensorRated Shutter LifeRAW Format
Sony A6700 (ILCE-6700)202326 MP APS-C stacked BSI200,000ARW
Sony A7 IV (full-frame comparison)202133 MP full-frame BSI150,000ARW
Sony A1 (flagship comparison)202150.1 MP full-frame stacked500,000ARW
Notably: A6700 is rated higher than A7 IV. The Sony A6700 (200,000) has a higher shutter rating than the full-frame A7 IV (150,000). This is because the A6700 uses a stacked sensor design with a more robust shutter mechanism, while the A7 IV uses a conventional BSI sensor in a more consumer-oriented body. Don't assume full-frame automatically means longer shutter life.

How Does ShutterCount Read the A6700 Shutter Count?

The Sony A6700 stores the shutter count encrypted in ARW MakerNote tag 0x9050. ShutterCount applies Sony's cubic residue decryption (modulo 249) and reads the count from byte offset 0x000a — a different offset than older Sony bodies (which use 0x003a). This offset is shared with the Sony A7C II, A7CR, and A1 II.

ShutterCount automatically identifies the camera model from ARW metadata and selects the correct offset. No manual configuration is required.

Why does the A6700 use a different offset?

Sony updated the internal MakerNote structure in the generation of cameras released around 2023–2024. The A6700 is the first APS-C body to use this updated layout. Older Sony tools may read an incorrect count from an A6700 ARW if they do not account for this change — ShutterCount does.

Sony A6700 Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Sony A6700?

Shoot an ARW file, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is decrypted from tag 0x9050 at offset 0x000a in your browser.

What is the rated shutter life of the Sony A6700?

Sony rates the A6700 at 200,000 actuations — higher than the full-frame A7 IV (150,000) due to its stacked sensor design and more robust shutter mechanism.

Is 100,000 actuations a lot for a Sony A6700?

At 100,000 actuations, the A6700 has used 50% of its rated 200,000-shot lifespan — moderate use. There is still substantial life remaining, but it is worth factoring into price negotiations if buying used.

Can the Sony A6700 shutter count be reset or faked?

Only a Sony authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter. Always verify from an original ARW file, not a screenshot.
