Check Shutter Count →The Sony A7 (2013) was the world's first full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera — a pivotal moment in photography history. With a 24.3 MP Exmor CMOS sensor in a compact body weighing just 474 g, the A7 proved that full-frame image quality no longer required a large DSLR. While its contrast-detect AF and limited battery life show their age, the A7 established the E-mount full-frame ecosystem that now dominates the market. The mechanical shutter is rated at 100,000 actuations.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Rated Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony A7 (ILCE-7) | 2013 | 24.3 MP full-frame | 100,000 | ARW |
| Sony A7 II (successor) | 2014 | 24.3 MP full-frame | 200,000 | ARW |
| Sony A7 III (3rd gen) | 2018 | 24.2 MP full-frame BSI | 200,000 | ARW |
| Sony A7S (video variant) | 2014 | 12.2 MP full-frame | 100,000 | ARW |
| Actuation Count | % of Rated Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 10,000 | 0 – 10 % | Very low use — near new |
| 10,000 – 30,000 | 10 – 30 % | Low use — plenty of life remaining |
| 30,000 – 60,000 | 30 – 60 % | Moderate use — normal for active photographers |
| 60,000 – 90,000 | 60 – 90 % | High use — negotiate price accordingly |
| 90,000 + | 90 %+ | Near or past rated life — budget for shutter service |
With only 100,000 rated actuations, the A7's shutter count matters more than on higher-rated cameras. A unit with 50,000 actuations has already used half its rated life. Given the very low used prices for the original A7, prioritise low-count units.
The Sony A7 stores the shutter count encrypted in ARW MakerNote tag 0x9050. ShutterCount applies Sony's cubic residue decryption (modulo 249) and reads the count from byte offset 0x0032. This is the older Sony offset shared by the A7, A7 II, A7R, A7R II, A7S, and A7S II generation.
All processing happens locally in your browser. The ARW file is never transmitted anywhere.
Shoot an ARW file, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is decrypted from tag 0x9050 at offset 0x0032 in your browser.
Sony rates the original A7 at 100,000 actuations. The successor A7 II doubles this to 200,000.
The A7 II adds 5-axis IBIS, a more durable shutter (200,000 rated), improved ergonomics, and better AF. For a small price premium on the used market, the A7 II is generally the better buy. The original A7 is only worth considering if the price difference is significant.
The original A7 does not have a silent/electronic shutter mode. Every frame uses the mechanical shutter and increments the counter. This makes the shutter count an accurate measure of total camera usage.
Only a Sony authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter. Always verify from an original ARW file, not a screenshot.
