Sony ZV-E2 — Shutter Rating & Specs

The Sony ZV-E2 is Sony's 2023 APS-C mirrorless vlogging camera, featuring a 12.1 MP BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor, 4K 60p video with full-pixel readout (no crop), and AI-based subject recognition autofocus. Sharing its sensor and core imaging pipeline with the A6100 family, the ZV-E2 is built for hybrid shooters and content creators who want interchangeable lenses in a compact body.

ModelReleaseSensorEst. Shutter LifeRAW Format
Sony ZV-E2 (ILCE-ZV-E2) 2023 12.1 MP APS-C BSI ~150,000 ARW
Note: Sony does not publish an official shutter rating for the ZV-E2. The estimate of ~150,000 actuations is based on the shared APS-C shutter mechanism with the A6100/A6400 class. Many ZV-E2 units also log high counts quickly due to burst shooting in video-adjacent workflows.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Sony ZV-E2

The Sony ZV-E2 stores the shutter count encrypted in MakerNote tag 0x9050 of every ARW RAW file. ShutterCount decrypts and reads it automatically.

  1. Set your ZV-E2 to shoot in ARW RAW or RAW+JPEG mode (File Format → RAW).
  2. Take any still photo and copy the resulting .ARW file from the memory card to your computer.
  3. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser and drag the ARW file onto the drop zone.
  4. The shutter count appears instantly. No upload, no account required.
Video files do not work. The ZV-E2's MP4/XAVC video files do not contain ARW MakerNote data. You must use a still RAW file to read the shutter count.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Sony ZV-E2?

When evaluating a used ZV-E2, keep in mind that vlogging-oriented owners often shoot in burst or run the camera extensively for video, which can mean higher-than-average mechanical counts even on "lightly used" bodies:

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 15,0000 – 10 %Very low use — near new
15,000 – 45,00010 – 30 %Low use — plenty of life remaining
45,000 – 90,00030 – 60 %Moderate use — normal for active shooters
90,000 – 130,00060 – 87 %High use — negotiate price; shutter service may be needed soon
130,000 +87 %+Near or past estimated life — budget for shutter replacement

How Does ShutterCount Read the ZV-E2 Shutter Count?

Sony stores the shutter count in ARW files in an encrypted form within MakerNote tag 0x9050. The encryption is a cubic residue cipher modulo 249: each byte is cubed modulo 249 to produce the decrypted value. After decryption, ShutterCount reads the 32-bit count from byte offset 0x003a within the decrypted block — the same offset used by the ZV-E1, A6700, A7 IV, and other current E-mount bodies.

All processing is local. The ARW file is never transmitted to any server. The decryption algorithm runs entirely in JavaScript in your browser.

Does the ZV-E2 shutter count appear in the camera menu?

No. Sony does not expose the shutter count in any menu on the ZV-E2. Reading from an ARW file via shuttercount.app is the standard method for consumer Sony cameras.

Sony ZV-E2 Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Sony ZV-E2?

Shoot a still ARW RAW file, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is read from MakerNote tag 0x9050 entirely in your browser.

What is the rated shutter life of the Sony ZV-E2?

Sony does not publish an official figure. The estimated lifespan is ~150,000 actuations, matching similar APS-C Sony bodies.

Can I use a ZV-E2 JPEG to check the shutter count?

No. Sony does not embed the encrypted shutter count in JPEG files. You must use an .ARW RAW file. If you normally shoot JPEG only, switch to RAW for one frame, then switch back.

Does the silent shutter mode count actuations?

No. The ZV-E2's silent shooting (electronic shutter) uses sensor readout without engaging the mechanical curtain. Those exposures are not counted. Only mechanical and EFCS exposures increment the counter.

How does the ZV-E2 compare to the ZV-E10 for shutter count purposes?

Both the ZV-E2 and ZV-E10 use APS-C sensors and ARW format. The ZV-E2 has a newer sensor with 4K/60p full-pixel readout. Both store shutter count in tag 0x9050, and both are readable by shuttercount.app.
