Canon EOS 1000D — Shutter Rating

The Canon EOS 1000D (2008), sold as the Rebel XS in North America and the Kiss F in Japan, was Canon's most affordable DSLR at launch — designed to bring interchangeable-lens photography to first-time DSLR buyers. It features a 10.1 MP APS-C CMOS sensor with a DIGIC III processor, a 7-point AF system, 3 fps burst, and CR2 RAW output. The mechanical shutter is rated at approximately 100,000 actuations — typical for Canon's entry-level consumer DSLRs.

Canon EOS 1100D (successor)201112.1 MP APS-C~100,000CR2

Canon EOS 450D (same gen)200812.2 MP APS-C~100,000CR2
CR2 consumer limitation: The Canon EOS 1000D does not store the shutter count in its CR2 RAW files. The count must be read via USB PTP connection using gphoto2 (Linux/macOS) or EOSInfo (Windows) while the camera is powered on and connected.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Canon EOS 1000D

  1. Connect your Canon EOS 1000D to your computer via USB and power it on in normal shooting mode (not review mode).
  2. On Linux/macOS: install gphoto2 and run gphoto2 --get-config=/main/status/shuttercounter.
  3. On Windows: download and run EOSInfo — it reads the shutter counter directly from the camera over USB.
  4. A Canon authorised service centre can also read the hardware counter without USB software.
Note: shuttercount.app reads shutter counts from RAW files. Because the 1000D's CR2 files do not embed the count, the browser tool cannot display it for this model. Use the USB methods above instead.

Canon EOS 1000D Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Canon EOS 1000D?

Connect the camera via USB and use gphoto2 (Linux/macOS) or EOSInfo (Windows). The CR2 RAW files from this model do not embed the shutter count, so shuttercount.app cannot read it from a photo.

What is the rated shutter life of the Canon EOS 1000D?

Canon rates the EOS 1000D at approximately 100,000 actuations — standard for Canon entry-level consumer DSLRs of this generation.

Is the Canon EOS 1000D the same as the Rebel XS?

Yes. The 1000D, Rebel XS, and Kiss F are the same camera sold under different regional names.

Should I buy a 1000D or a 1100D?

If prices are similar, the Canon EOS 1100D is a better choice — it offers a higher-resolution 12.1 MP sensor, DIGIC 4, and 720p video. The 1000D makes sense only if you find one in excellent condition at a notably lower price.

Can the shutter count on a Canon EOS 1000D be reset?

Only a Canon authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter after a physical shutter replacement. Always verify the count via USB yourself before purchasing.
