Straight answer first: the Maxxum 5D — Dynax 5D in Europe, α Sweet Digital in Japan — does not write a lifetime shutter count into its files. Not into MRW, not into JPEG. The browser tool on this site cannot give you one, and neither can ExifTool, because the field does not exist to be read. Every “5D with 6,000 actuations” figure you will see in a listing came from somewhere else — usually the file number. What the file does hold, and what actually tells you how hard a 5D has been worked, is below.
What to check instead →Konica Minolta announced the camera on 15 July 2005 at $799 body-only, against the $1,199 the Dynax/Maxxum 7D above it was selling for by then. It was the company’s entry-level digital SLR and, as it turned out, the last Konica Minolta DSLR: the camera business passed to Sony in January 2006.
Mechanically it is the 7D made cheaper rather than the 7D made worse. The same 6.1 MP APS-C CCD, the same Anti-Shake sensor-shift stabilisation working with every A-mount lens back to 1985, in a lighter body with a simplified interface: the 7D’s thirty external controls drop to twenty-one, and the dedicated top-plate status panel disappears entirely. The 2.5-inch rear screen takes over as image review, menu and settings display in one.
That last detail matters for this question more than it looks. On a 5D there is no top panel showing a frame counter, so the only number an owner ever sees is the folder-and-file number on the rear screen — and that number is not a shutter count. Mistaking one for the other is the single most common source of actuation claims for this camera.

The question persists because the 5D’s direct rivals answered it. The Nikon D50 of the same season writes an actuation counter into its NEF MakerNote at tag 0x00A7, and Nikon has kept one there ever since, so it is reasonable to assume the datum is universal and only needs the right reader. On Konica Minolta it is not there to read.
ExifTool is the reference implementation: it decodes Minolta RAW thoroughly, and its Minolta module (Minolta.pm, version 2.89) carries a binary-data table written specifically for this body. That table, CameraSettings5D, hangs off MakerNote tag 0x0114 — a different tag from the 7D’s 0x0004, selected by a model condition that matches DYNAX 5D, MAXXUM 5D and ALPHA SWEET alike, so all three regional names land in the same place. Across that table and every other table in the module there is no ShutterCount, no ReleaseCount, no actuation tag of any kind. What the table does define is this:

ImageNumber is file numbering, not actuations. It follows the DCF sequence the camera writes onto the card, so it ignores frames you deleted, ignores exposures that never reached the card, and restarts whenever numbering is reset or File Number Memory is turned off. Two 5D bodies showing the same ImageNumber can be tens of thousands of frames apart. As a lower bound on one unbroken card sequence it is mildly informative; as a shutter count it is simply wrong.
If you would rather confirm the absence than take a web page’s word for it, that is about a minute’s work. ExifTool is free, runs locally, reads the file and changes nothing in it.
The first command prints nothing at all — not a zero, not an error, just no such tag. The second prints the whole MakerNote, where you will find [MakerNotes] Image Number, Free Memory Card Images, the Anti-Shake and lens fields, and no counter anywhere among them. That is the state of the camera, not a limitation of the command.
exiftool -ImageNumber PICT0042.MRW gives the file number of that frame. Ask a seller for their most recent file and it tells you how far the current numbering sequence has run — a reasonable sanity check against a claim of “barely used”, and proof of nothing, because any owner can reset it from the menu.
On a body this age the count would be a weak signal even if it existed. A 5D is twenty years old and usually changes hands for less than the price of a decent lens hood; whether it fired 6,000 frames or 60,000 matters less than how it was stored and what has aged inside it. The checks that actually decide whether one is worth buying:
Most 5D bodies are still sold with the 18–70 mm DT kit zoom attached, so check the lens on its own merits too — zoom creep, loose mount, fungus. Ask for a full-resolution out-of-camera file as well: even without a count it proves the camera powers up, exposes, writes to a card and identifies itself, and the capture timestamp shows whether the sample was taken today or dug out of an old folder.
No shutter-durability rating for the 5D traceable to Konica Minolta could be found — the period specification sheets and reviews quote none, which was entirely normal for entry-level bodies of 2005. Manufacturers of the time published durability figures for professional cameras and stayed quiet about consumer ones.
Community shutter-life databases do collect self-reported 5D failures, and the averages they publish sit in the low-to-mid tens of thousands of actuations. Read those as anecdote, not as a rating: they are self-selected samples, weighted towards owners who had something go wrong, mixing serviced bodies with unserviced ones, and they carry no manufacturer’s guarantee behind them. Any number you see attached to this camera — including a round ~100,000 (est.) borrowed from the enthusiast bodies of the era — is an estimate, which is why no figure appears in this page’s summary or its meta description.
The practical consequence is simple, and on a 5D it is stronger than on most cameras: condition is the specification. A clean body with a smooth shutter, a working Anti-Shake unit and a readable screen is a better buy at an unknown count than a scuffed one with a low number that came from a file name.
The counter arrives in this lens mount with Sony rather than with Konica Minolta. The bodies below were confirmed against full-size release samples rather than inferred, and for them the number really does come back from a file dropped into the browser — the A-mount SLT among them:
