Leica M10-D Shutter Count:
How to Check & What It Means

The Leica M10-D (2018) is the only digital M rangefinder without a rear LCD — image review happens exclusively through the Leica FOTOS app. The shutter count is embedded in every DNG file and can be read free in your browser below.

Leica M10-D — Shutter Rating

The Leica M10-D (type 3656, launched October 2018) shares its 24 MP full-frame CMOS sensor and cloth focal-plane shutter mechanism with the standard M10. The defining feature is the deliberately omitted rear LCD: shooting is intentional, image review is delegated to a smartphone via the Leica FOTOS app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The top plate gains an analogue ISO dial (ISO 200–6400), reinforcing the film-camera aesthetic. Estimated shutter life is approximately 150,000 actuations (Leica does not publish official ratings).

DNG shutter count: The M10-D records native DNG files. ShutterCount reads the actuation count from the EXIF MakerNote (ImageCount tag) directly in your browser. No upload, no login.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Leica M10-D

  1. Via shuttercount.app (browser): Take a photo with your M10-D, transfer the DNG to your computer (via SD card, Leica FOTOS app, or USB cable), then drop the file into shuttercount.app. The actuation count appears immediately — 100% local, no upload.
  2. Via ExifTool: Run exiftool -ImageCount yourfile.DNG or exiftool -ShutterCount yourfile.DNG. Leica DNG files embed the count in the MakerNote section under the ImageCount tag.
  3. Via Leica FOTOS app: Connect your M10-D to the Leica FOTOS app (iOS/Android) over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Navigate to Camera Settings → Camera Information to view the cumulative shot count on your phone screen — the only method that doesn’t require transferring a file first.
  4. When buying used, ask the seller to send you a DNG test shot and verify the count via shuttercount.app before committing.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Leica M10-D?

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 5,0000 – 3 %Near new — very low use
5,000 – 30,0003 – 20 %Light use
30,000 – 80,00020 – 53 %Moderate use
80,000 – 120,00053 – 80 %High use — negotiate price
120,000 +80 %+Factor in shutter service (€500–1,000+)
Leica service costs: Leica shutter service on M-series bodies typically costs €500–1,000+ at an authorised Leica service centre. For used M10-D bodies with high counts, factor this into the purchase price. Independent repair shops may offer lower rates but may void any remaining Leica warranty.

Leica M10-D — FAQ

Can I check shutter count without the LCD?

Yes — three methods work on the M10-D: (1) Drop a DNG file into shuttercount.app in your browser, (2) use ExifTool on the DNG file, or (3) connect to the Leica FOTOS app and view Camera Information. The absence of a rear LCD does not affect the DNG metadata, so the file-based methods are fully reliable.

Does the ISO dial affect shutter count accuracy?

No. The analogue ISO dial on the M10-D top plate is a physical control for setting the camera’s ISO sensitivity. It does not affect the shutter mechanism, shutter count tracking, or DNG file structure. The count increments by one for every mechanical shutter actuation regardless of ISO setting.

M10-D vs M11-D — what are the differences?

Both remove the rear LCD for a deliberate, film-like approach. The M11-D (2024) is the successor with a 60.3 MP BSI sensor (vs 24 MP), USB-C charging, a higher estimated shutter life, and a simpler top plate (no analogue ISO dial — ISO set via the FOTOS app). The M10-D is the original screenless M concept and remains popular on the used market for its simpler approach and lower price point.

What to inspect when buying a used M10-D?

Key inspection points: verify shutter count via DNG file, test Leica FOTOS app connectivity (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairing), inspect the rangefinder patch for cloudiness or misalignment, check the top ISO dial for smooth click action, examine the M-mount contact ring condition, and confirm the SD card slot lid closes securely. The absence of a rear LCD means there is no LCD to check for dead pixels — this removes one common used-camera concern.
