Drop a .DNG file from your Leica SL (Typ 601) and get the exact shutter actuation count instantly — processed entirely in your browser, never uploaded anywhere. DNG is fully supported in shuttercount.app — no extra tools needed.
Check Shutter Count →The Leica SL (Typ 601, 2015) was Leica’s first serious step into the autofocus mirrorless market — a full-frame body with a 24.3 MP CMOS sensor, a massive 4.4M-dot electronic viewfinder (the highest resolution EVF of its time), and a minimalist body design with only three buttons on the back. It introduced the L-mount bayonet that Panasonic and Sigma later adopted in the 2018 L-Mount Alliance agreement. The SL writes native DNG files, which embed the shutter count in standard EXIF fields readable directly in shuttercount.app.
Leica does not publish an official shutter rating for the SL. The estimated mechanical lifespan is approximately 150,000 actuations.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Est. Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leica SL (Typ 601) | 2015 | 24.3 MP full-frame CMOS | ~150,000 | DNG |
| Leica SL2 | 2019 | 47.3 MP full-frame CMOS | ~150,000–200,000 | DNG |
| Leica SL2-S | 2020 | 24.6 MP BSI CMOS | ~150,000–200,000 | DNG |

| Actuation Count | % of Est. Life | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 5,000 | 0 – 3 % | Near new — collector condition |
| 5,000 – 40,000 | 3 – 27 % | Light use — good working condition |
| 40,000 – 100,000 | 27 – 67 % | Moderate to heavy use |
| 100,000 – 130,000 | 67 – 87 % | High use — factor in shutter service cost |
| 130,000 + | 87 %+ | Near or past estimated life |
Yes. The L-mount on the original SL is mechanically identical to the modern L-Mount Alliance standard. Panasonic S-series lenses and Sigma fp/Contemporary/Art L-mount lenses will physically mount and operate on the SL. Some lenses may require firmware updates for full feature compatibility. Older Leica SL lenses (Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–90, APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90–280) are fully native and perform optimally.
No. The original SL (Typ 601) does not have IBIS — in-body image stabilisation was not added until the SL2 (2019). This is one of the main reasons the SL2 command a significant premium on the used market over the original SL despite both being competent cameras.
The SL uses a contrast-detect autofocus system with 49 AF points. This is slower and less reliable for tracking than the phase-detect systems found in contemporary Sony and Canon mirrorless cameras. The SL was designed primarily for manual focus with rangefinder-style shooting — its EVF magnification aids precise manual focus confirmation. AF performance improved substantially with the SL2.
Only Leica authorised service centres can reset the hardware shutter counter. Always verify from an original DNG file — not from a screenshot or seller-provided value.
