Nikon 1 AW1 — Shutter Rating & Specs

The Nikon 1 AW1 (2013) is a landmark camera: the world's first waterproof and shockproof system camera with interchangeable lenses. Based on the Nikon 1 CX-format platform, it features a 14.2 MP 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor, waterproofing to 15 m depth, shockproofing to 2 m drops, and freeze-proofing to −10 °C. It uses a dedicated AW-series lens mount compatible with standard Nikon 1 lenses via an adapter.

Nikon 1 AW1 2013 14.2 MP 1-inch BSI CX CMOS ~100,000 NRW
Note: Nikon does not publish an official shutter rating for the AW1. The ~100,000 figure is an estimate consistent with other Nikon 1 bodies. The sealed construction of the AW1 may also affect shutter serviceability — budget for a full body replacement rather than shutter repair on heavily used examples.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Nikon 1 AW1

The Nikon 1 AW1 stores the shutter count in MakerNote tag 0x00A7 of its NRW RAW files — the same tag used by all Nikon 1 series cameras. ShutterCount reads it automatically.

  1. Take any still photo with your Nikon 1 AW1 and locate the .NRW file on your memory card or computer.
  2. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).
  3. Drag the NRW file onto the drop zone, or click to browse and select it.
  4. The shutter count appears instantly. No upload, no account required.
Underwater shots: NRW files taken underwater are identical in structure to those shot in air. The shutter count increments normally for every mechanical exposure, regardless of whether the camera is submerged.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Nikon 1 AW1?

The AW1 is often used in demanding outdoor environments — diving, surfing, skiing, hiking in rain. Inspect the seals and lens mount rubber carefully on used examples, as seal degradation is a more likely failure mode than shutter wear:

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 10,0000 – 10 %Very low use — near new
10,000 – 30,00010 – 30 %Low use — good condition expected
30,000 – 60,00030 – 60 %Moderate use — inspect seals carefully
60,000 – 90,00060 – 90 %High use — seal replacement likely needed; negotiate price
90,000 +90 %+Near estimated limit — shutter and seal service likely overdue

How Does ShutterCount Read the AW1 Shutter Count?

The Nikon 1 AW1 uses the NRW (Nikon RAW) format, which stores the shutter count as a 32-bit integer in MakerNote tag 0x00A7 — the same tag used by the Nikon 1 J1 through J5 and V1 through V3 bodies. ShutterCount reads this tag and returns the count directly, with no decryption required (Nikon does not encrypt the count in MakerNote, unlike Sony).

All processing is local. The NRW file is never transmitted to any server.

Does the electronic shutter affect the count?

The Nikon 1 AW1 has both a mechanical shutter and an electronic shutter. The mechanical shutter counter in tag 0x00A7 increments only for mechanical shutter exposures. High-speed continuous shooting using the electronic shutter (up to 60 fps in some modes) does not increment the mechanical counter.

Nikon 1 AW1 Shutter Count — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Nikon 1 AW1?

Shoot a NRW RAW file, then drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is read from MakerNote tag 0x00A7 entirely in your browser.

What is the rated shutter life of the Nikon 1 AW1?

Nikon does not publish an official figure. The estimated lifespan is ~100,000 actuations, consistent with other Nikon 1 series bodies.

How deep can you take the Nikon 1 AW1 underwater?

The AW1 is waterproof to 15 m (49 ft) without any housing, making it suitable for snorkelling, shallow diving, and water sports. For deeper diving, a dedicated underwater housing is required.

What lenses work with the Nikon 1 AW1 underwater?

Only the dedicated AW-series lenses (1 NIKKOR AW 11–27.5mm and 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8) are waterproof and can be used with the AW1 underwater. Standard Nikon 1 lenses can be attached via adapter, but they break the waterproof seal and can only be used in dry conditions.

Is the Nikon 1 AW1 still supported by Nikon?

Nikon discontinued the entire Nikon 1 system in 2018. Firmware updates and lens production have ended. The AW1 remains fully functional and its NRW files are readable by current software, but Nikon service availability is shrinking globally.
