Check the shutter actuation count of your Olympus PEN E-PL5 — processed entirely in your browser, never uploaded anywhere. Note: ORF files may not reliably embed the count; use the camera menu or ExifTool method below.
Check Shutter Count →The Olympus PEN E-PL5 (2012) is a compact Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera that brought significant improvements to the PEN entry-level line: a higher-resolution 16 MP Live MOS sensor (up from 12 MP on the E-PL3), 3-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) — the first E-PL body to include it — a tilting touchscreen, built-in flash, and improved TruePic VI image processing. It features a 35-area contrast-detect AF system, 8 fps burst (electronic shutter), and ORF RAW output. The mechanical shutter is estimated at approximately 100,000 actuations (not officially published by Olympus).

The E-PL5's tilting LCD hinge is the most common mechanical failure point on used PEN bodies. Flex the screen gently — it should hold any position firmly without wobble. Loose hinges require a costly display unit replacement.
The 3-axis IBIS was a new feature on the E-PL5 and can develop calibration drift on older units. Test by shooting at 1/8s handheld with a standard lens — compare stabilised vs non-stabilised results. On a properly functioning body you should see approximately 2–3 stops of benefit.
The E-PL5 lacks the ultrasonic sensor-cleaning system found in Olympus OM-D bodies. Check for sensor dust by shooting a clear blue sky at f/11 or higher — any dust spots will be clearly visible. Sensor cleaning is straightforward for a technician but adds cost.
The E-PL6 (2013) is essentially the same camera with minor firmware improvements and colour options. Both are good compact MFT cameras. If you need Wi-Fi, skip both and look at the E-PL7 (2014) which added built-in Wi-Fi and a 180°-tilting selfie screen.
Go to MENU → Setup (wrench) → Camera Information in-camera for the most reliable reading. Alternatively, drop an ORF file into shuttercount.app or use ExifTool on desktop.
Olympus has not published an official rating. Approximately 100,000 actuations is the community estimate, based on its entry-level class.
Yes — the E-PL5 introduced 3-axis in-body image stabilisation to the PEN entry-level line (the E-PL3 and earlier E-PL models relied entirely on lens IS). IBIS works with all Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lenses.
Only an Olympus authorised service centre can reset the hardware counter. The camera menu count is read-only and cannot be modified by the user.
