OM System OM-3 — Shutter Rating

The OM System OM-3 is a 2024 mid-range Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera positioned between the OM-5 and the flagship OM-1 Mark II. It shares the 20 MP Live MOS sensor and offers weather sealing, in-body image stabilisation, and a refined autofocus system in a compact, well-built body aimed at enthusiast photographers. OM System does not publish an official shutter rating; approximately 150,000 actuations is the community-accepted estimate.

Electronic shutter note: The OM-3 supports a fully silent electronic shutter mode (up to 1/32,000 s) that adds zero mechanical wear. Street and travel photographers who primarily use silent mode may accumulate very low mechanical shutter counts even after years of use. Always ask what shutter mode was primarily used.

How to Check Shutter Count on the OM System OM-3

ORF limitation: OM System ORF files do not reliably store the mechanical shutter count in EXIF data. The in-file count is firmware-dependent and not confirmed for the OM-3. The most reliable method is the camera menu.

Method 1 — Camera Menu (most reliable)

  1. Power on the OM-3 and open the Menu.
  2. Navigate to the Setup Menu (wrench icon).
  3. Scroll to find Number of Shutter Releases or look under Info/Display settings.
  4. The total mechanical shutter count is displayed directly.

Method 2 — Browser Tool (attempt)

  1. Take any photo with your OM-3 and locate the .ORF file.
  2. Open shuttercount.app and drag the ORF file onto the drop zone.
  3. If the firmware embeds the count, it will appear. If not, the tool will note that no confirmed shutter count tag was found — use Method 1 in that case.

OM System OM-3 Shutter Count — FAQ

Does the OM System OM-3 store shutter count in ORF files?

Not reliably. OM System ORF files contain a MakerNote section, but the shutter count tag is not documented and is firmware-dependent. The camera menu method is the most reliable way to read the OM-3's shutter count.

How does the OM-3 differ from the OM-5 for buyers?

Both are mid-range weather-sealed MFT cameras with similar sensor and IBIS specs. The OM-3 is newer (2024 vs 2022) and brings updated subject-recognition AF and interface refinements. Both have an estimated ~150,000-actuation mechanical shutter life.

Can I check shutter count from a JPEG taken with the OM-3?

Possibly — the OM-3 may embed the shot count in JPEG EXIF MakerNote data depending on firmware. Drop any JPEG or ORF into shuttercount.app and the tool will attempt to read available metadata.
