Panasonic Lumix S1 II — Shutter Rating

The Panasonic Lumix S1 II is a 2025 full-frame L-mount mirrorless camera that succeeds the original S1, bringing phase-detection autofocus (a major improvement over the S1's contrast-only DFD AF), an updated processor, and improved video capabilities. It shares the L-Mount Alliance ecosystem with Sigma and Leica. Like all Panasonic Lumix cameras, the S1 II does not store the shutter count in RW2 files.

Panasonic Lumix S1 (predecessor)201924 MP full-frame400,000RW2

RW2 files never contain shutter count: Panasonic has consistently not embedded shutter count in RW2 files across the entire Lumix lineup. Dropping an RW2 into shuttercount.app will read available EXIF metadata (model, ISO, focal length, etc.) but will not return a shutter count. Use the camera menu or Lumix Sync app for the actual count.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Panasonic Lumix S1 II?

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 20,0000 – 10 %Very low use — near new
20,000 – 60,00010 – 30 %Low use
60,000 – 120,00030 – 60 %Moderate use
120,000 – 180,00060 – 90 %High use — negotiate price
180,000 +90 %+Near or past est. life — budget for shutter replacement
Video-use shutter count tip: Panasonic Lumix cameras are popular hybrid stills/video cameras. When shooting video, the mechanical shutter is not engaged — video-heavy users accumulate very low shutter counts relative to their shooting hours. An S1 II with 5,000 actuations could easily be a heavily used video production camera.

Panasonic Lumix S1 II Shutter Count — FAQ

Why doesn't Panasonic store shutter count in RW2 files?

Panasonic has never embedded shutter count in RW2 files — this is a consistent design choice across all Lumix cameras. The count lives in the camera body's internal memory and is accessed via the menu. This applies equally to the S1 II, S5 II, GH7, G9 II, and all other current Lumix models.

Is the S1 II a significant upgrade from the S1?

Yes, primarily due to autofocus. The original S1 uses DFD (Depth from Defocus) contrast AF which is slower for subject tracking. The S1 II adds phase-detection AF, bringing it in line with Sony and Canon AF performance. Both have similar RW2 shutter count behaviour and comparable build quality.

Does the S1 II have an electronic shutter?

Yes. The S1 II includes an electronic shutter mode (up to 1/8,000 s) that adds zero mechanical wear. The mechanical shutter count only increments for mechanical or EFCS (Electronic First Curtain Shutter) exposures.
