Read It From a DNG

Drop a DNG from your Ricoh GR IV HDF into the tool and the actuation count is read from the Ricoh MakerNote in your browser. Swapping the ND filter for a highlight diffusion filter changed the picture, not the metadata — but it did change how much of this body's life runs on the leaf shutter, and that is worth understanding before you read the number.

What the GR IV HDF is

Ricoh announced the GR IV HDF on 16 December 2025 and put it on sale in late January 2026 at $1,599.95 — $100 above the standard GR IV. It is the GR IV platform with one component exchanged: the two-stop ND filter that sits in the lens barrel of a normal GR is replaced by a Highlight Diffusion Filter, a thin filter built with Ricoh's inkjet technology that spreads bright areas into a soft halo while leaving the subject's edges largely intact. It swings into and out of the light path on a single button press — the Fn button is assigned to it out of the box.

Everything else — sensor, processor, lens, stabilisation, body, storage — is the GR IV. This is not a new generation; it is a filter choice made permanent at the factory, in the same way the GR III HDF and GR IIIx HDF were in 2024. If you want the ND filter back you buy the standard model, and if you want the diffusion effect on a standard model you cannot: the two filters occupy the same slot.

Why the count reads the same as on a standard GR IV

The GR series has stored its release counter in a Pentax-style MakerNote since the GR III. The value lives in tag 0x005D, four bytes, always big-endian, XOR-obfuscated against the Date (0x0006) and Time (0x0007) tags — the algorithm documented in ExifTool's Pentax.pm and exiv2. In a Ricoh DNG that MakerNote is not in the usual EXIF tag 0x927C; it is carried in IFD0 tag 0xC634 (DNGPrivateData) behind a RICOH\0 header, which is where the parser goes looking for it.

That path is selected on the Make field, not on the model name. A GR IV HDF DNG identifies itself as a Ricoh Imaging body and is decoded by exactly the same code as a GR IV, a GR IIIx or a Pentax K-3 III file. The HDF is a piece of glass on a mechanism in front of the sensor; it does not move, rename or re-encode a single metadata tag.

The honest caveat. No GR IV HDF file has yet been through the release-validation corpus that backs the confirmed entries on the home page. The reading path is model-agnostic and the body is the GR IV platform, so there is every reason to expect the count to come out — but "expected" is not the same as "confirmed on a sample", and this site does not pretend otherwise. If a count does not appear, the file is not broken; the tag simply was not there.
Own one? A single unedited DNG sent to info@shuttercount.app is enough to move this body from "expected" to "confirmed" in the support matrix.

How to check it

  1. Set the camera to RAW or RAW+JPEG and take a frame. The counter is written per release, so the shot you take during an inspection is itself the measurement.
  2. Copy the .DNG off the microSD card — or off the 53 GB internal memory over USB, if the seller shot without a card in.
  3. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser and drag the file onto the drop zone.
  4. The count, the model and the body serial number appear immediately. Nothing leaves your machine.

On the desktop, the same value comes out of ExifTool: exiftool -ShutterCount file.DNG. Use a DNG rather than an in-camera JPEG — the DNG is the container this site's Ricoh path is documented against, and a JPEG that has been through an edit or a phone app has usually lost its MakerNote.

The HDF-specific part: no ND filter means fewer mechanical actuations

This is the one thing about a GR IV HDF that a standard GR IV page cannot tell you. The ND filter on a normal GR exists to let you shoot wide open in daylight. Take it away and f/2.8 in sunshine runs out of shutter speed, because the GR's leaf shutter tops out at 1/4000 s and cannot even reach that at wide apertures. Ricoh's answer was to give the HDF an electronic shutter to 1/16000 s — a function the standard GR IV did not have at launch and only received in February 2026 with firmware v1.11.

The crossover is automatic and aperture-dependent. Per Ricoh's own description of the function:

So on this body the frames that would have been taken behind an ND filter — bright light, aperture open, fast speed — are the frames most likely to be taken on the electronic shutter instead, with the mechanical blades standing still. An HDF used the way it is meant to be used should accumulate mechanical wear more slowly than a standard GR IV shot in the same conditions.

And here is what that does to the number. It is not established whether tag 0x005D counts electronic-shutter frames on the GR IV family. There is no second tag to compare against — nothing like the separate MechanicalShutterCount that Nikon writes on the Z8 and Zf — so the tool cannot split the total for you. Read the value as a release counter: a sound measure of how much the camera has been used, a poor measure of how much the leaf shutter in particular has been worn. On an HDF the gap between those two things is wider than on any other GR.

The practical consequence for a buyer is small but real: do not treat a high count on an HDF as proof of a tired shutter, and do not treat a low one as proof of a fresh one. What counts as a high count — and why the number is soft here

Ricoh has never published a shutter durability figure for a GR body, and the GR IV HDF is no exception. The ~200,000 (est.) figure attached to the GR series across this site is a community estimate for the GR III / GR IIIx / GR IV leaf shutter, not a Ricoh specification. Treat the table below as a way to read a number in context, not as a countdown to failure.

A leaf shutter is not a focal-plane curtain. The estimates that circulate for GR bodies were built on curtain-lifetime intuitions from DSLRs, and a leaf shutter in a retracting lens unit fails differently: sticky blades at slow speeds, or dust and grit that got in past the retracting barrel. On a camera that went on sale in January 2026 the realistic question is not whether the shutter is worn out but whether the barrel has been treated well.

One more note on the tool itself: the remaining-life bar falls back to a generic reference figure for bodies with no entry of their own. On this body that bar is not a Ricoh rating, and given the electronic-shutter question above it is measuring something even less definite than usual. Ignore it and read the raw number.

How do I check the shutter count?

Shoot a RAW frame, copy the DNG off the card or the internal memory, and drop it into shuttercount.app. The count is read from the Ricoh MakerNote in your browser, with no upload and no account.

Does the HDF change anything about the metadata?

No. The filter changes the image, not the EXIF. The DNG container, the Ricoh MakerNote block and tag 0x005D are identical to the standard GR IV, and the parser selects its path on the manufacturer rather than the model name.

Why does this model matter for shutter wear?

Because the HDF took the ND filter's place, and Ricoh compensated with a 1/16000 s electronic shutter. Between f/2.8 and f/4 the mechanical leaf shutter is used only to 1/2500 s and the electronic shutter takes over from 1/3200 s, so the bright-light shooting the ND used to cover now happens without moving the blades.

Does the counter include electronic-shutter frames?

Unknown for the GR IV family, and there is no separate mechanical-count tag to compare against. Read the value as a release counter: good for gauging use, unreliable for gauging leaf-shutter wear specifically.

What is the rated shutter life?

Ricoh publishes none for any GR body. The ~200,000 (est.) figure used across the GR pages here is a community estimate for the same leaf shutter, not a manufacturer number.

Has this exact body been validated here?

Not yet — the path is the validated Ricoh path, but no GR IV HDF sample has been through the release corpus. That is why this page describes the count as expected rather than confirmed.
