It was the world’s first compact camera with an APS-C-sized sensor — a remarkable achievement in miniaturisation at the time. The sensor is the original Foveon X3 design, with three silicon photodiode layers capturing colour at every pixel location, eliminating the need for a Bayer colour filter array. Each layer resolves 2640×1760 pixels, for a total of approximately 14 megapixels of data per image.
Sigma does not publish an official shutter life rating for the DP1. Estimated lifespan is approximately 50,000–100,000 actuations. The camera’s extremely slow write speed and single-shot buffer make high-volume shooting impractical, so many examples have accumulated very few actuations despite years of ownership.

Even active photographers rarely exceed 10,000 shots in a year with the DP1. Shutter counts are less diagnostic here than on faster cameras.

The DP1’s concept was radical for 2008: an APS-C sensor (23.4×15.8 mm) in a body roughly the size of a compact camera, with a fixed wide-angle lens. The trade-offs were severe. The leaf shutter allows flash sync at any speed, but the original DP1 could shoot only at ISO 50–400, and write times of 15–30 seconds per X3F file made shooting sequences nearly impossible. Sigma Photo Pro software was required to develop X3F files — no third-party RAW converter supported the format at launch.
Despite these limitations, the DP1 developed a devoted following among photographers who valued its unique image quality at base ISO. The Foveon X3 sensor produces images with a distinctive rendering of fine textures and colour transitions that differs noticeably from Bayer-pattern cameras.
The original DP1 (2008) and DP2 (2009) use the first-generation Foveon X3 sensor at 2640×1760 pixels per layer (~14 MP effective). The DP1 Merrill (2012) upgrades to the Foveon X3 Merrill sensor at 4704×3136 pixels per layer (~46 MP effective) — a roughly 3× increase in resolution. The Merrill also has better high-ISO performance and much faster write speeds. The original DP1 is now primarily a collector and historical item.
