The faster f/2.8 aperture and slightly longer focal length made the DP2 more appealing for street and travel photography than the wide f/4 DP1. ISO range is 50–800, slightly wider than the DP1’s 50–400.
Sigma does not publish an official shutter life rating for the DP2. Estimated lifespan is approximately 50,000–100,000 actuations. The camera’s slow write speed and single-shot buffer make high-volume shooting impractical.

Many examples have accumulated only a few thousand actuations over many years. The shutter count is less diagnostic here than on faster cameras; sensor and lens condition are the primary factors to evaluate.

The DP2 addressed the main criticism of the original DP1 — its wide 28mm-equivalent field of view was appealing to some but limiting for others. The DP2’s 41mm equivalent is closer to a standard lens, and the f/2.8 aperture provides a stop and a third more light than the DP1’s f/4. This made the DP2 the more popular model of the two originals. The DP2 also expanded ISO to 800 (from the DP1’s ceiling of 400), though ISO 400 and 800 remain barely usable on the first-generation Foveon X3 sensor.
Both the DP1 and DP2 require Sigma Photo Pro for optimal RAW conversion. At launch, no third-party software supported X3F files, though later versions of Lightroom, Capture One, and other tools added basic support. Sigma Photo Pro remains the recommended tool for the best image quality from original X3F files.
The three DP2 generations span first-generation (2009), Merrill (2012), and Quattro (2014). The first-generation DP2 uses the oldest Foveon X3 sensor (14 MP effective) and has the slowest write speed. The Merrill doubles the resolution (~46 MP effective) with the symmetric three-layer design. The Quattro uses an asymmetric design (~29 MP effective) optimised for speed and high-ISO performance. For practical use in 2026, the Quattro is the most capable; the Merrill is the resolution champion; the original DP2 is now primarily a historical curiosity and collector item.
