Sony SLT-A35 — Shutter Rating & Specs

The Sony SLT-A35 (released June 2011) is a mid-range A-mount interchangeable-lens camera using Sony's Single Lens Translucent (SLT) technology. The fixed translucent mirror enables continuous phase-detection autofocus during both stills and HD video recording — a key advantage over contemporary DSLRs that used contrast-detect AF for video. The 16.2 MP APS-C Exmor sensor, 7 fps continuous burst, and compact A-mount body made the A35 a well-regarded enthusiast option at its launch.

Sony SLT-A35 2011 16.2 MP APS-C CMOS (Exmor) ~100,000 ARW
Note: Sony does not publish an official shutter rating for the SLT-A35. The ~100,000 figure is an estimate based on comparable A-mount SLT bodies in the same class.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Sony SLT-A35

The Sony SLT-A35 embeds the shutter count in the ARW RAW file's Sony MakerNote. ShutterCount reads it automatically.

  1. Take any photo with your Sony SLT-A35 and locate the resulting .ARW file on your memory card or computer.
  2. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser.
  3. Drag the ARW file onto the drop zone, or click to browse and select it.
  4. The shutter count appears instantly. No upload, no account required.
Always verify from an ARW file you receive from the seller's memory card, not from a screenshot or verbal count. The Sony ARW MakerNote cannot be easily modified to show a false count.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Sony SLT-A35?

The A35 was used mainly as an enthusiast all-rounder for travel, portraits, and video. Its 7 fps burst capability means counts can accumulate faster in sports or wildlife contexts, but most consumer use patterns result in slower accumulation:

Actuation Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 10,0000 – 10 %Very low use — near new condition
10,000 – 30,00010 – 30 %Low use — excellent condition expected
30,000 – 60,00030 – 60 %Moderate use — inspect all functions
60,000 – 85,00060 – 85 %High use — negotiate price
85,000 +85 %+Near estimated limit — shutter service risk

Understanding Sony SLT Technology & Shutter Count

The SLT-A35's defining feature is its Single Lens Translucent mirror — a fixed, stationary mirror made of a semi-transparent material that divides incoming light: approximately 70% reaches the image sensor for capturing photos, while 30% is deflected upward to a dedicated phase-detection AF sensor module.

Key implications for shutter count:

SLT mirror maintenance: The translucent SLT mirror can attract dust and develop spots over time. This affects image quality (especially at small apertures) but does not affect the shutter count. Clean the mirror with a blower only — not contact cleaning tools.

Sony SLT-A35 vs SLT-A37 — Which to Buy?

The Sony SLT-A37 (2012) succeeded the A35 with minor updates: a slightly revised body, improved BIONZ processing, and 10 fps burst capability. Image quality is very similar (both use 16 MP APS-C Exmor sensors). The A37 is marginally preferable due to newer firmware and slightly faster burst, but price differences on the used market are minimal. Both use ARW format with the same shutter count embedding method.

Sony SLT-A35 Shutter Count — FAQ

Does the SLT-A35 shutter count include video recording?

The mechanical shutter does not fire during video recording on the SLT-A35 (video uses the electronic shutter mode). Only still image captures increment the mechanical shutter counter. A body used primarily for video may have a lower shutter count than its total usage hours suggest.

What A-mount lenses work best with the SLT-A35?

The A35 is compatible with all Sony A-mount and Konica Minolta Maxxum/Dynax lenses. Phase-detection AF works with all native A-mount lenses via the dedicated AF sensor on top of the pentaprism. Sony's DT (APS-C) lenses are the natural match, but full-frame A-mount lenses work identically with a slight vignetting absence benefit in APS-C crop.

Can the A35 shutter count be read without a RAW file?

The camera itself does not display the shutter count in its menu. The most reliable method is the ARW file — drop it into shuttercount.app. As a fallback, Sony's service centres can read the count from the camera directly.
