Hasselblad X2D II 100C Shutter Count:
What Can Actually Be Checked

Two honest answers up front. ShutterCount does not parse Hasselblad 3FR files, so dropping an X2D II 100C RAW into the tool will not give you an actuation count. And on the X system there is no focal-plane shutter in the body at all — mechanical exposures are made by the leaf shutter inside each XCD lens, so wear accumulates per lens, not per camera.

Hasselblad X2D II 100C — what it is

Hasselblad announced the X2D II 100C on 25 August 2025, with shipping from mid-September 2025 at $7,399 for the body. It is the second-generation 100 MP X-system flagship and the first medium format camera Hasselblad markets as supporting end-to-end HDR, writing HDR HEIF or Ultra HDR JPEG in camera.

Why there is no body shutter count

On a DSLR or a conventional mirrorless body, “shutter count” is a wear figure for one part: the focal-plane shutter behind the sensor. The X system is built differently. Each XCD lens carries its own electronically controlled leaf shutter, which is why the X2D II 100C syncs flash at every mechanical shutter speed — and why the moving parts that age live in the glass you bought, not in the body.

The practical consequence for a used purchase: a body with a low total exposure figure tells you little if it is sold with one heavily used lens, and a well-used body paired with a fresh lens may have the healthier shutter of the two. Ask about each lens separately.

No documented actuation counter: the X2D user manual does not describe an actuations or exposure-count display, and Hasselblad does not write the figure into the standard EXIF fields that public tools decode. ExifTool does parse 3FR and FFF containers, but there is no publicly verified X-system actuation tag inside them — so treat any number a third-party tool prints for this camera as unconfirmed rather than as a shutter count.

The only official exposure figures Hasselblad publishes

Hasselblad publishes no “rated for N actuations” specification for X-system shutters. What it does publish is a warranty ceiling expressed in exposures, which is the closest thing to an official durability signal — and it differs sharply between lens generations:

Read those as warranty limits, not as a tested lifespan: a leaf shutter can outlast its warranty ceiling by a wide margin, and the reverse is also possible. The gap between the two rows matters when shopping for an X2D II 100C kit, because the current V- and E-series lenses — including the XCD 2,8–4/35–100E announced alongside the camera — sit in the 100,000-exposure group.

If a listing quotes an exact actuation number: ask where it came from. Owners and service technicians report that replacing a lens exposure unit resets its counter to zero, so a “low count” on an older lens can simply mean it has already been serviced — useful to know either way, but not the same thing as a lightly used lens.

How to establish usage on a used X2D II 100C

  1. Ask for a service report. An authorised Hasselblad service centre or dealer can read usage data from the body and from each lens. On a $7,000+ purchase this is the only figure worth relying on, and a serious seller will obtain it.
  2. Open the files in Phocus. Hasselblad’s free Phocus software (Mac and Windows) reads 3FR and FFF and shows the capture metadata the file carries. Use it to confirm the body serial, firmware and capture dates — not to expect an actuation total.
  3. Date the body from the images. A run of original 3FR files spanning the ownership period tells you how the camera was used: studio bursts versus a few hundred landscape frames a year is a real difference, even without a counter.
  4. Inspect what actually fails. The 1 TB internal SSD (check free space and that it reads and writes), the CFexpress Type B slot pins, the LiDAR window, the tilting OLED screen hinge, IBIS behaviour at slow speeds, and each XCD lens’s shutter for a consistent, even sound across apertures.
  5. Get a supported second body checked for free. If the seller also has a Fujifilm GFX, Canon, Nikon, Sony or Pentax body in the deal, those RAWs can be read in the browser — a useful cross-check on how heavily the seller shoots.

Which cameras this tool can read

ShutterCount runs entirely in your browser and reads the counter from Canon CR3/CR2, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fujifilm RAF, Pentax and Ricoh PEF/DNG, plus HEIF and JPEG variants of the same MakerNotes. Hasselblad 3FR is not among them, and neither Olympus ORF nor Panasonic RW2 carries a usable counter. Can ShutterCount read the shutter count from an X2D II 100C file?

No. The browser tool does not parse Hasselblad 3FR RAW files at all, so no actuation count appears — there is nothing to drag and drop here. This is a parser limitation, not a claim about your camera.

Does the X2D II 100C have a mechanical shutter?

Not in the body. Mechanical exposures come from the leaf shutter inside the mounted XCD lens (68 minutes to 1/4000 s, flash sync at all speeds); the sensor’s electronic shutter covers 68 minutes to 1/6000 s. AF-C, new on this model, requires the mechanical shutter rather than the electronic one.

What is the rated shutter life?

Hasselblad does not publish one for X-system shutters. The only official figures are the warranty terms above — 1,000,000 exposures for earlier XCD System lenses, 100,000 for the newer V- and E-series — and those are ceilings on a 12-month warranty, not a durability test result.

Is a leaf shutter more fragile than a focal-plane shutter?

Not inherently, and reports from high-volume studio use suggest Hasselblad leaf shutters are durable; damage more often comes from impact or from autofocus mechanics than from cycling. The meaningful difference is economic: replacing a lens exposure unit is a lens repair, priced per lens, and a multi-lens kit means several independent wear items instead of one.

How does the X2D II 100C differ from the X2D 100C?

Same 100 MP 43.8 × 32.9 mm format, substantially different camera around it: AF-C with subject detection, 425 PDAF zones instead of 294, LiDAR-assisted focus, IBIS rated to 10 stops, a 3.6-inch tilting OLED touchscreen, 1 TB internal SSD as standard, HDR HEIF and Ultra HDR JPEG output, and 840 g with battery.
