Olympus Tough TG-6 Shutter Count:
How to Check It Free

The Olympus Tough TG-6 stores its shutter count in the camera menu rather than in ORF RAW file metadata. Drop an ORF file into shuttercount.app or follow the camera menu steps below — either way, no upload ever leaves your device.

Olympus Tough TG-6 — About the Shutter

The Olympus Tough TG-6 (2019) is the sixth generation of Olympus’ legendary rugged compact camera series. It is built around a 12 MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor and a fixed Zuiko 25–100mm f/2.0 lens (4× zoom), packaged in an IP68 waterproof body rated to 15 metres depth, crush-proof to 100 kgf, freeze-proof to −10°C, and shock-proof from 2.1 metres.

ModelReleaseSensorEst. Shutter LifeRAW Format
Olympus Tough TG-5201712 MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS~100,000ORF

OM System Tough TG-7202312 MP 1/2.3" BSI CMOS~100,000ORF
ORF shutter count caveat: Unlike Olympus OM-D bodies where the shutter count may appear in ORF MakerNote data, the TG-6’s ORF files do not reliably store a confirmed shutter-count EXIF tag. Use the camera menu method for an accurate count, or try the ORF file in shuttercount.app as a secondary check.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Olympus Tough TG-6

There are two methods for checking the TG-6’s shutter count. The camera menu method is more reliable.

Method 1 — Camera Menu (recommended)

  1. Power on the TG-6 and press the MENU button.
  2. Navigate to the Setup Menu (the wrench icon, last tab).
  3. Scroll down and select Camera Information.
  4. The display shows the total cumulative shutter release count for this body.

Method 2 — ORF File (secondary)

  1. Set the TG-6 to RAW or RAW+JPEG mode and take a photo.
  2. Open shuttercount.app in any modern browser.
  3. Drag the .ORF file onto the drop zone or use the file picker.
  4. If a count is displayed, verify it against the camera menu for accuracy.

All processing happens entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded to any server, so your privacy is fully protected.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Olympus TG-6?

The TG-6 is primarily marketed as an adventure and underwater camera. Bodies used for snorkelling, diving, hiking, or travel may accumulate counts quickly; those used casually may have very low counts despite being several years old.

ActuationsAssessment
0 – 3,000Barely used — essentially new
3,000 – 10,000Light use — excellent condition
10,000 – 30,000Normal recreational use — good condition
30,000 – 60,000Active outdoor/dive use — inspect carefully
60,000 – 100,000Heavy use — budget for potential service
100,000 +Beyond estimated life — only at a bargain price
Beyond the shutter count: for a used TG-6, always inspect the lens element for fungus or condensation damage (common if the port seal was compromised), check the USB port rubber cover for cracking, and test waterproofing seals before any underwater use.

How Does ShutterCount Read the TG-6 Shutter Count?

The Olympus Tough TG-6 records images in Olympus’ ORF format. ShutterCount attempts to extract the shutter count from the Olympus MakerNote IFD embedded in the ORF file. On OM-D series bodies the count is reliably stored there, but the TG series does not guarantee a standard lifetime counter in the RAW file.

All parsing happens in your browser via JavaScript — your ORF file is never uploaded, so your privacy is fully protected. For the most accurate result, use the camera menu method described above.

Can I check from a JPEG?

The TG-6 does not embed the shutter count in JPEG EXIF data. Always use an ORF RAW file or the camera menu for count verification.

Does video use affect the shutter count?

No — video recording on the TG-6 uses the electronic shutter, which does not increment the mechanical counter. A body with 50,000 actuations may have been used extensively for video in addition to stills.

Olympus Tough TG-6 — FAQ

How do I check the shutter count of my Olympus TG-6?

Go to MENU → Setup (wrench) → Camera Information. The count shown is the cumulative lifetime total. Alternatively drop an ORF file into shuttercount.app, though the camera menu is more reliable for the TG series.

What depth is the TG-6 waterproof to?

The Olympus Tough TG-6 is rated to 15 metres depth under the IPX8 standard (equivalent to IP68). For recreational scuba or freediving to greater depths, an additional waterproof housing is required. Always replace the port seal annually and before any dive use.

What is the TG-6 successor?

The OM System Tough TG-7 (2023) is the direct successor, released under the OM System brand following Olympus’ restructuring. The TG-7 uses the same sensor and lens but adds improved subject recognition AF, 4K/50p video, and an upgraded image processor.

Can the shutter count be reset?

Only an authorised service centre can reset the internal hardware counter after a mechanical component replacement. The counter shown in the camera menu is the permanent lifetime total and cannot be altered by the user.
