The Olympus Tough TG-5 stores its shutter count in the camera menu rather than reliably in ORF RAW file metadata. Drop an ORF file into shuttercount.app or follow the camera menu steps below — either way, no upload ever leaves your device.
Check Shutter Count →The Olympus Tough TG-5 (2017) is the fifth generation of Olympus’ legendary rugged compact camera series. It is built around a 12 MP 1/2.3” BSI CMOS sensor with a fixed Zuiko 25–100mm f/2.0 lens (4× zoom), packaged in an IP68 waterproof body rated to 15 metres depth, crush-proof to 100 kgf, freeze-proof to −10°C, and shock-proof from 2.1 metres. The TG-5 introduced 4K video recording and RAW (ORF) capture to the TG line.
| Model | Release | Sensor | Est. Shutter Life | RAW Format |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Olympus Tough TG-5 | 2017 | 12 MP 1/2.3” BSI CMOS | ~100,000 | ORF |
| Olympus Tough TG-6 | 2019 | 12 MP 1/2.3” BSI CMOS | ~100,000 | ORF |
| OM System Tough TG-7 | 2023 | 12 MP 1/2.3” BSI CMOS | ~100,000 | ORF |
There are two methods for checking the TG-5’s shutter count. The camera menu method is more reliable.
All processing happens entirely in your browser — your file is never uploaded to any server.
The TG-5 is frequently used for adventure and underwater photography. Bodies used for snorkelling, diving, or rugged outdoor work may accumulate counts quickly; those kept as a casual backup may show very low counts despite their age.
| Actuations | Assessment |
|---|---|
| 0 – 3,000 | Barely used — essentially new |
| 3,000 – 10,000 | Light use — excellent condition |
| 10,000 – 30,000 | Normal recreational use — good condition |
| 30,000 – 60,000 | Active outdoor/dive use — inspect carefully |
| 60,000 – 100,000 | Heavy use — budget for potential service |
| 100,000 + | Beyond estimated life — only at a bargain price |
The Olympus Tough TG-5 records images in Olympus’ ORF format. ShutterCount attempts to extract the shutter count from the Olympus MakerNote IFD embedded in the ORF file. On OM-D and PEN series bodies this count is reliably stored, but the Tough TG series does not guarantee a standard lifetime counter in the RAW file.
All parsing happens in your browser via JavaScript — your ORF file is never uploaded. For the most accurate result on this model, use the camera menu method described above.
No — the TG-5 uses the electronic shutter for video recording, which does not increment the mechanical counter. A body with 30,000 actuations may have also been used extensively for 4K video.
Go to MENU → Setup (wrench) → Camera Information. The count shown is the cumulative lifetime total. Alternatively drop an ORF file into shuttercount.app, though the camera menu is more reliable for the TG series.
The Olympus Tough TG-5 is rated to 15 metres depth under the IPX8 standard. For recreational scuba or freediving to greater depths, an additional waterproof housing is required. Replace the O-ring seal annually and before any dive use.
The Olympus Tough TG-6 (2019) is the direct successor. The TG-6 adds Pro Capture mode, a USB-C port, improved AF, and updated processing, while keeping the same f/2.0 lens and 15 m waterproofing. The OM System Tough TG-7 (2023) is the current model, adding AI-based subject recognition and 4K/50p video.
Only an authorised service centre can reset the internal hardware counter after a mechanical component replacement. The counter shown in the camera menu is the permanent lifetime total and cannot be altered by the user.
