Panasonic Lumix S1 III — Shutter Rating

The Panasonic Lumix S1 III is the third generation of Panasonic's full-frame L-mount mirrorless, succeeding the S1 II (2025). It continues the evolution of Panasonic's full-frame hybrid lineup in the L-Mount Alliance alongside Sigma and Leica lenses. Like all Panasonic Lumix cameras, the S1 III does not store the shutter count in RW2 files.

ModelReleaseSensorEst. Shutter LifeRAW Format
Panasonic Lumix S1 III2026Full-frame BSI CMOS~300,000 est.RW2
Panasonic Lumix S1 II (predecessor)202524 MP full-frame BSI~300,000 est.RW2
Panasonic Lumix S5 III (comparison)202524 MP full-frame BSI~300,000 est.RW2
RW2 files never contain shutter count: Panasonic has consistently not embedded shutter count in RW2 files across the entire Lumix lineup. Dropping an RW2 into shuttercount.app will read available EXIF metadata (model, ISO, focal length, exposure data) but will not return a shutter count. Use the camera menu or Lumix Sync app for the actual count.

How to Check Shutter Count on the Panasonic Lumix S1 III

Method 1: Camera menu (recommended)

  1. Power on the Panasonic Lumix S1 III.
  2. Press the MENU button and navigate to the Setup menu (wrench icon).
  3. Scroll down to find Shutter Count.
  4. The total lifetime mechanical shutter actuation count is displayed on screen.

Method 2: Lumix Sync app

  1. Install the Lumix Sync app on your smartphone (available on iOS and Android).
  2. Connect the S1 III to your phone via Wi-Fi (Menu → Setup → Wi-Fi → Wi-Fi Function).
  3. Open Lumix Sync and navigate to the camera information section.
  4. The shutter count is displayed alongside other camera diagnostics.

Method 3: RW2 file via ShutterCount (EXIF only)

  1. Take any photo with your Panasonic S1 III and locate the .RW2 file.
  2. Drop the RW2 file into shuttercount.app.
  3. Available EXIF metadata (model, date, ISO, focal length) will be displayed. Note: shutter count is not available in the RW2 MakerNote.

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used Panasonic Lumix S1 III?

With an estimated ~300,000-actuation lifespan (Panasonic does not publish official ratings), the S1 III offers solid durability. Use the camera menu method to verify the count when inspecting a used body:

Count% of Est. LifeAssessment
0 – 30,0000 – 10 %Very low use
30,000 – 90,00010 – 30 %Low use — plenty of life remaining
90,000 – 180,00030 – 60 %Moderate use
180,000 – 270,00060 – 90 %High use — negotiate price
270,000 +90 %+Near estimated end of life — budget for shutter service

Note: S1 III bodies used heavily for video may have very low mechanical shutter counts despite significant use — video recording does not increment the counter.

Why Doesn't Panasonic Store Shutter Count in RW2 Files?

Panasonic has never embedded shutter count in RW2 RAW files across any Lumix camera — G-series, S-series, GH-series, or otherwise. This is a consistent design choice: the count is stored internally in the camera body and is accessed via the menu system.

This differs from Nikon (tag 0x00A7 in NEF), Sony (encrypted tag 0x9050 in ARW), and Canon (MakerNote offset in CR3). The Lumix Sync app is Panasonic's official remote access path for the counter data.

Does video use wear the S1 III shutter?

No. Video recording uses the electronic readout and does not activate the mechanical curtain. Mechanical shutter count only increments for stills shot with the mechanical shutter or EFCS (Electronic First Curtain Shutter). An S1 III used as a primary video camera may show a very low count despite thousands of hours of video recording.

Panasonic Lumix S1 III — FAQ

Can shuttercount.app read the S1 III shutter count from an RW2 file?

No — RW2 files do not contain the shutter count. ShutterCount correctly reads other EXIF data from the RW2 file (model ID, exposure settings, date) but shutter count is not present. Use the camera menu (Menu → Setup → Shutter Count) instead.

Why does Panasonic not embed shutter count in RW2?

This is a longstanding design decision by Panasonic applicable to all Lumix cameras. The counter lives in the body's internal memory and is not written to the RAW file. It applies equally to the S1 III, S5 III, GH7, G9 II, and all current Lumix models.

Is the S1 III worth buying used for video?

Video bodies often have very low mechanical shutter counts (since video doesn't use the mechanical shutter), which can make the camera appear lightly used even after extensive professional video work. Consider lens contact wear, body cosmetics, sensor dust, and battery health as indicators of video-heavy use.

How does the S1 III differ from the S1 II?

The S1 III builds on the S1 II's phase-detection AF foundation with improved subject tracking, enhanced video codec options, and refined IBIS. Both use RW2 format; neither stores shutter count in-file. The camera menu method is identical for both.
