OM System OM-1 Mark III — Shutter & Specs

The OM System OM-1 Mark III is the third generation of OM System's professional Four-Thirds mirrorless flagship. Building on the OM-1 (2022) and OM-1 Mark II (2024), the Mark III carries forward the 25 MP back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor paired with a next-generation TruePic processor. Key updates include a refined subject-recognition engine, enhanced computational photography modes, and improved Pro Capture performance for wildlife and sports shooters at up to 50 fps. The rated mechanical shutter life of 400,000 actuations sets it apart from all other Micro Four Thirds bodies.

ORF shutter count limitation: Olympus and OM System ORF files do not contain a confirmed reliable in-file shutter counter. ShutterCount correctly parses EXIF metadata (model, date, ISO, focal length) from OM-1 Mark III ORF files, but cannot report the mechanical actuation count. To check the shutter count on an OM System body, use the camera's built-in menu (Menu → Wrench → Shutter Count) or contact an authorised OM System service centre.

How to Check Shutter Count on the OM System OM-1 Mark III

Method 1: Camera menu (recommended)

  1. Power on your OM System OM-1 Mark III.
  2. Open the Menu and navigate to the Wrench (Setup) tab.
  3. Scroll to Shutter Count or Number of Shots.
  4. The total mechanical actuation count is displayed on screen.

Method 2: ORF file via ShutterCount

What Is a Good Shutter Count for a Used OM System OM-1 Mark III?

With a 400,000-actuation rated life, the OM-1 Mark III has exceptional shutter durability for a mirrorless camera. Use the camera menu method to verify the count before purchasing.

OM System OM-1 Mark III Shutter Count — FAQ

Why can't ShutterCount read the shutter count from the ORF file?

Olympus and OM System cameras do not store a reliable in-file shutter counter in their ORF MakerNote. Unlike Nikon (tag 0x00A7) or Sony (tag 0x9050), there is no confirmed standardised tag across OM System bodies that contains a permanent actuation count. The camera menu is the authoritative source for this data.

Does the OM-1 Mark III display shutter count in the menu?

Yes. Navigate to Menu → Wrench tab → Shutter Count. This displays the total mechanical shutter actuation count since manufacture — a feature that Nikon and Sony require third-party tools to access.

Is the 400,000-actuation shutter rating reliable?

OM System's rated shutter life of 400,000 actuations is a tested durability specification, not just a marketing claim. It is the same rating as the original OM-1 (2022), and professional wildlife photographers routinely exceed it without shutter failure. The rating applies to the mechanical shutter; Pro Capture uses electronic shutter and does not contribute to the count.
